Route south

Hi everyone. My wife and I are leaving on a trip from central Illinois to San Antonio Texas. Our question is the route. Is it a good way to go by going south to Louisiana and then west to San Antonio or going to St. Louis and interstate 44 and through Oklahoma and down?
Thanks for your feedback.

Going south

What is your objective? Scenery? Historic sites? Smooth roads? Are you looking for a fast way? What would you like to see? Have you made the trip before? I'm one that loves the drive as much as the destination and I like to see new places. I can tell you San Antonio is fantastic. Love that town. There has been a thread running lately about how bad IH10 is thru Louisiana, but the state is beautiful.
Give us a little more info for what your goal is and I'm sure you will get some great suggestions.

As a trucker, I prefer the St. Louis route vs the Louisiana way. The Louisiana route is rougher than a corncob.

One objective is the quickest and smoothest way. We will be pulling our fifth wheel (3820fk) and want to arrive with the least breakage as possible. LOL. We are also considering going south to route 10 and west through Louisiana because we have never been through there before and we both like pretty scenery. Do not want to drive rough roads if possible. Don’t we all! We all want smooth roads We should have with all the road use money we pay out. But that is for another thread. We would appreciate any advice you could give us. Thank you.

If you take your time on I-10 you will be fine! We are in Baton Rouge currently and heading west tomorrow. I'll let you know just how rough I-10 is when we get done with Louisiana. The St Louis route could be very troublesome especially with all the snow there now. When are you leaving by the way?

Setting in San Antonio right now after leaving Lake Charles, Louisiana this morning. I10 from Baton Rouge to Beaumont, TX is pretty rough with a lot of construction. It is manageable but may need to slow down some. I'm coming from south Georgia so I don't have much choice but to use I10.

Thank you. Were you at any standstills along the way. Was that about 200 miles?

No real slow downs other than construction reduced speed limits. Went through Houston at about 65mph on a Saturday. Probably a lot slower on a week day. Close to 340 miles from Lake Charles to SA.

Yeah it is always slower in construction zones. About how far from Baton Rouge to Beaumont? We are planning on leaving end of month for actually keerville Texas. It is north of San Antonio.

You might try going south thru Memphis and check out Tom Sawyer RV Park on the banks of the Mississippi in West Memphis. Then down to the Mississippi coast for crawfish. Then head east to New Orleans before taking on the rest of I10 in LA. Great seafood all along the gulf coast.

Well our Daughter lives in New Canton, IL We have driven that a lot
We cross the river on 72 at Hannibal
Take 54 south to I44
I44 to OK City
I35W through FT Worth
We bail off of I35 in Waco to grab 77 south, but you may not want to go that far out of your way

What ever you do stay off of 69 in OK. There should be laws against roads to be that bad

No good reason to go all the way down to I-10. I'd save the South Louisiana visit for another time. It is worth such a visit. BUT . . .

From Tom Sawyer I can give you a good route that I am familiar with. Take I 40/I 30 to Sulphur Springs, TX then south on TX 19 to Athens. You totally avoid Dallas and there are good routes through Little Rock and Texarkana. I've never had to slow down. I will mention the only negative of I 40/30 and that is the heavy truck traffic. But I've never had a problem. The drivers have always been courteous.

From Athens, TX take TX 31 to Waco--a good state road. I take our trailer over it all the time. At Waco drop down on I 35 to Belton, TX where you take I 14/US 190 over to Lampassas, TX to pick up US 281 south to Johnson City then US 290 to Fredericksburg and finally TX 16 on to Kerrville.

This sounds more complicated that it really is, but I commend it for your consideration. It is surely the way I would go and I have had experience with almost every mile of this route. The only difference is that I would even take some short cuts that would make this post even more complicated.

Chasers, let me know how you like Kerrville. Looking at the area for next winter.

Avoid Louisiana. The roads are terrible.

I am wanting to go as far south as I can to get warmer temps. Is I 10 through Louisiana doable at a slower speed? My call of course but those of you that have driven it is it as bad as what? Is it all pot holes or? Previous posts have said a lot of construction. Is there any construction finished?

We did I10 from Perry, FL to Los Angeles in November. Many stops along the way. Road wasn't that bad in Lousiana. Yes, there's construction and the big cities are rough. Slow and steady gets you there safely. Have Reese 5th Airborn pin box, don't feel the bad roads that much.
