Questions about axles

Hello, I am in need of new tires for my "05 3670RL. I have been reading as much as I can on MOC and else where about tires. I have seen many postings about the axle specs. Some postings say to look at the axles for their ratings. I tried. Is it stamped or a sticker? I looked at the sticker in the kitchen cabinet. It states that he GVWR is 14,160#. The UVW is 10,920#. Does this mean that the axles are rated at 7,000# each? Any help would be great..

You have 6000 lb axles. Somewhere on the axles you will find D60 stamped on them

You should have a sticker or plate on the side at or near the left front corner of your rig. It should give you the weight capacity of the axles. From your weights, and age of your rig, you probably have 6,000 lb axles, but you must rely on the sticker, unless the axles were replaced in the past. You do not use the entire GVWR of a 5th wheel trailer to determine the load on the axles, because approximately 20-25% of the rig's weight is supported by the kingpin, which is in turn supported by the tow vehicle, so somewhere between 2,832 lbs to 3,540 lbs will be carried by the tow vehicle. That puts your weight on the axles at less than 6,000 lbs per axle. That makes your tire selection easy, you can go with ST (special trailer) or LT (light truck) tires. Many people on this forum and others find LT tires hold up quite well on their rigs, and you have a much better selection to choose from. You obviously have tires on there now, and if you have been happy with them, that is a starting point. Good luck.

Richard-- I looked up your rig under the spec section but it didn't have the shipping weight for the unit but did have the carrying weight of 3600 and the hitch weight of 2160. I have a 2004 2980RL and had to replace my front axle a little over a year ago down in Texas. Both axles were 6000# axles and I replaced the front one with a 7000#. Call Keystone and Dexter about two different weight axles and they said it would be no problem as long as I carried the unit level whole going down the road. As 8.1al stated if you go under the rig and check I'm sure you will either find a tag stating the capacity of the axle or I will be stamped into the axle as mine were and are. The newer axles have a tag where the older axles such as mine, and I'm presuming ours, it is stamped into the axle itself. If you have a 7000# axle you can carry 3500# on each side of he axle but I would venture to say you have the same as I had and have a lot less weight carrying capacity on each wheel.

The most accurate documentation of what your axles are is as said on the axle itself. Some are stamped (mine was on the streetside rear) right on the axle and is kinda hard to read. The newer ones have a white sticker on each axle more apparent to see. Like said D60 is 6000# and D70 is 7000#. There will be other numbers, but the afore mentioned will be dominate. The sticker on the side of your fiver will not give the actual axle rating, just tow weights.
