Chevy Built in Brake Controller Settings

Out of curiosity, what setting do you use on the new built in brake controllers in you 2011/12 Chevy/GMC vehicles on when towing? Have not hit the road with mine yet, and wanted to see what most settings were prior to going out. Thanks

I'm using 7 to 7.5 and seems to work fine, but with the exhaust brake enabled brake usage is at a minimum now compared to our 2005. We're loaded to the gills, so we're running on the heavy side, but that setting seems to work for us.

I set mine at 7.0 to 8.5 depending on the mood I'm in! Forgot to say that my Chevy is a 2007.5 model not the newer unit like yours!

Mine is set at 8.5 and works very well, especially with the exhaust brake on.

Again this is one of those things you can't rely on to be the same for anyone. Braking depends on the load, the balance of the load, condition of the brakes on the TV and the trailer. I find I prefer higher setting than what everyone posts.

I don't always stay with the same setting, nor do I stay with that same setting even during a trip. I find colder weather means I use lower setting and hotter weather I use higher settings. I can only guess on the reasons, but I prefer to just check often enough. The changes are ever so slight, just like the air bag adjustability especially that things are now broken in. Now I have to watch things more carefully as things are getting old and more worn out.

Some prefer tighter trailer braking (like I do) and some don't mind more of the load on the TV. I can only recommend you develop what you like and set your controller accordingly. I find over time I am not adjusting it as much as I discover the sweet spots of braking. I'll also note that I have a Ford, but knowing how to adjust brakes is the same for all trucks, in that it must be done and you must know how.

I'm running our 2012 Chevy 3500HD DRWs at 7.5 but thats when I'm towing the SOB which has disk brakes and the weight is 17,500 (plus or minus) as we all know the weight is always different, depending on the trip. The inclosed car hauler is different runs on 5 the equipment trailer when heavy it will be set according to weight. As said above with the exhaust brake on the Chevy HD's the brakes shoes or disk brake wear will be much less. Just check when balancing the tires on the SOB and it still has over 60% left after two years of towing many of those miles were in the Colorado Rockies and if you have pulled the Rockies there are some very high passes.. But the GM exhaust brake makes a tremendous difference. Happy Trails....

We also have a GMC 2011 3500HD and the setting is 8.5.
