2008 Ford F250 6.4 ?

Thanks to the responses on the 2003 6.0 we scraped that one. Now looking at a 2008 F250, 6.4 with 91000mi Has this been a good low trouble choice for the forum. Thanks, ray

We have a 08 6.4 with 43000 mi. on it and it has never had a mechanical issue but the fuel economy is terrible as most 6.4 owners will tell you. With 91000 mi. it has been used. What was it used for? If it has a fifth wheel hitch it was probably used for delivery. If it has a gooseneck hitch it was probably used for horse trailer. Horse trailer use is pretty hard on the truck. Always hauling a load. Get a Carfax report on it and if you purchase it check in to an extended warranty. Repairs on these trucks can be very expensive.

I, too, have an 08 6.4, about 65,000 miles on it (F350 dually though). No known issues. The good: pulled more weight on a flatbed car-hauler trailer than I even want to admit for a thousand mile trip, never noticed the trailer was back there. Even coming up into the black hills of south dakota, had all the power I wanted and more. The bad: forget fuel mileage. Pulling that load at interstate speeds (70+) I'm not sure if I even got 7 mpg. Drop back to 60 or a bit over, would get 8 or 9 if very lucky. Empty if I drive it like it's a turtle, will get close to 15.

Like Dave West MPG sucks. 7.8 mpg on a 150 mile trip last week pulling the 5er.
Never did the turtle.
Without the trailer I get 12.
SUCKS

Another issue with the 6.4s (I believe it is with all model years that have the 6.4L) is that to do turbo / a lot of the various engine work, the dealer must pull the cab off the chassis. Adds cost and time to any significant repair.

Sorry Ray, many of us Ford owners are pretty proud of our trucks and now the truth is coming out. However, I'm happy with the power, strength and fuel economy of my 2006 with a 6.0L PSD. I think the summary is the 6.4 should be avoided and the first year of the 6.0 if you want a truck for your son. I frequently get 19-20 mpgs on the highways and keeping it under 75. I have had no problems with my 6.0 at all, but others have posted some of theirs. I still have a bit of time & miles with my warranty, so time will tell.

Just trying to keep things accurate (not positive or negative). I wonder if EVERY Ford owner piped in, how different the results would be - I recall at least turbo coming loose or failing fuel injectors. There have been other posts about Dodge & GMC/Chevy.

Good luck on your search.

What about a Chevy D/A combo or a Dodge Cummins?

As a Ford driver, I never jump on a Dodge or Chevy thread to tout my brand.

I just traded a 2008 F350 6.4 L DRW. I did have two issues that arose in my 67,000 miles of use. I had a sudden failure of the hydroboost that knocked out the power steering. It was repaired under warranty with no repeat of the problem. The second issue was a failed radiator, replaced after my warranty ran out to the tune of about $1,000. The engine has 7 radiators/coolers.

With a 4:33 rear end, there was no problem ascending any mountain I tried. The big negative was the fuel mileage and the fear of having an engine problem requiring cab removal in a post warranty era.

Hummm. We have the 6.4L with 37K miles on it nearly all towing the heavy 3400. We have never had a problem of any kind. This is s heavy truck but we tow at 62/65mph and get 10/11 mpg on a average day
16/17 solo. Run faster and the MPG goes down the tubes. we are very happy with this 08 6.4L

I do not know what is the matter with this truck but it runs perfect and gets reasonable MPG.

when we had that latest flash on it last week the tech that test drove it said..His words..." this is s sweet running truck"

Was thinking of upgrading as we rarely keep a truck over 3 years but this one is a keeper.

Sounds like we get better than average mpg with our 6.4...when towing, we get between 9.5 and 10.4 mpg traveling below 65mph...the difference is how level the terrain is; non-stop highway driving below 65mph we get better than 20mpg unloaded. Of course, we do not drive our 8k lb truck like a race car.

Just offering a suggestion, not pushing a brand, I don't "have a brand"...he's looking for a diesel truck.

I have owned a 1995 ford F 250 with the powerstroke 7.3 turbo diesel and was towing
A 28 ft enclosed trailer with a Mercedes race car inside ,golf cart, huge tool box, compressor ,etc etc .
Use to get 11 to 13 miles to the gallon depending of road condition and speed .
I also use to pull a 32 ft Laredo fifth wheel with it .
I bought a new 2009 chevy duramax with the Allison transm. In 2010.
I now pull the2010 Montana 3400 rl with this FANTASTIC TRUCK , so far I average 12.7 miles to the gallon
Pulling the trailer and I have 8500 miles on the truck right now
In town driving with no load I always get around 16 miles to the gallon
On trips over 180 miles ( Topeka KS to Kingman KS ) empty no load visiting friends we always get above 20 miles to the gallon
With above 21 miles to the gallon on trips over 300 miles
I am extremely pleased with my truck, and no I have absolutely no reason to push Chevy sales .
I am a Mercedes tech and wish I could have a Mercedes truck to pull my fiver but none availlable in the U S A
My son now use the ford f 250 in his business still run strong at 180000 miles
My opinion : you can,t beat the duramax and Allison power train
