Low clearance issues...big time !

I'll try and make this short. They are rebuilding bridge right outside this cg. built a new one to use in the meantime, right next to it. They just closed the road under the old bridge, which is the entry into the cg (and a little residential area behind). They've detoured traffic into the campground under the new bridge....low clearance signs say 13'0". My rig is 13'4", and I know I'm not the tallest. I had discussions with both DOT and City Gov (the park is owned by the city). I have heard everything from "we called ALL rv manf., and no one builds one over 13' " to "if you are over 13', you are illegal" to " as long as it's posted, don't worry about it". I feel we have an obligation to contact all those with reservations, as well as letting anyone that calls know about this. This situation will exist for between 22 and 45 days until work over the other road is completed, so it is short term. Had a rig leave yesterday (was in here before closing), and I spent an hour moving the barricades/cones/etc off of the old entrance so he could get out (he's 13'6"). I did so with no permission....tough, sue me. I swear, any day now we are going to have a rig stuck like a dart under that new bridge....but I have no idea what else to do.
Thanks...needed to vent on this !!!!!!!!

Bill,
My rig says it is 12'9" but I think I'm closer to 13'0". Now I'll have to measure again! And this time I'm going to post a note inside the cab of the truck so I'll remember!

Good luck. I thought 14'0" or somewhere around there was the National Standard. Well as long as they have it clearly posted..... Dennis

We are 13' 3.5" with our front air. I have seen rigs taller than ours.

Don't they have the Internet there. A look on Keystone's web site will prove the did not do there homework. Wow! What if you were long term renters and went on vacation? Will the campground get involved? Seems to me that they are the long term looser.

Edited: Where are you? What is the city?

Maybe we can make a phone call, or 1000.

Oh! So an 18 wheeler with a box trailer at normal height of 13' 6" is illegal, or just on that road because it is posted?

I can hear roofs ripping off now.

13.6 limit for Pennsylvania turnpike, if you set off a alarm they have set up wayyy up there, you are not legal to go.

Sorry to say it, but the officials responsible for this error need to be replaced by some that have some resemblance of intelligence. Ya, I know, that is rather strong, but after reading their comments, I have to ask

REALLY???

Along the lines of low clearance. Last week when we checked into Holiday Travel Park in Holiday, FL we were given a site and directions. Ann was watching as I was turning the corner prior to backing into our site when she screamed STOP. We were catching on electric wires. I had to get on the roof of the Monty and lift the wires over the Sat Dish and AC while Ann slowing pulled the Rig forward. We notified the office who contacted the Electric company, who came out later that evening, looked at the wires and said "Nothing we can do". We told them no skin off our nose as they were now behind us, but what about the next big rig that goes through there. We looked around and saw numerous low wires. This is a rather old park and their electric poles are very short. So if you decide to stop there, be cautious of low hanging wires.

If they were really electric wires and not phone or CATV wires, be very careful if you move them. If they are old, the insulation could be cracked or worn from age and you are setting yourself up for one nasty electric shock up to and including death.

Jim, they were the electric wires, but they were pretty new tri-plex wires with good insulation, so I just carefully lifted them over the dish and ac and all was good for us. Don't know about the next person who might go through.

We're 13' 3" and when we went through the Chesapeake Bay tunnel from Delaware to Virginia, we were wondering...until we saw a semi (13' 6") traveling with about a half foot clearance. The tunnel authority had similar signs up and radar, but I think they give you a few extra inches. The worst part was the width, or lack thereof, of the lanes.

In Boston, we somehow got in the wrong lane and were left with the option of either a 12' 6" clearance or head towards the tunnel that disallows hazardous material (propane). We paid the toll, waited for the trooper who then escorted us through the first tunnel and then re-routed us up and around the second tunnel.

Oh, and on Hwy 1 in Connecticut, we were toodling down the road when we both saw the dreaded 12' 6" warning sign. With only one road to take, we spent about 40 minutes trying to get back on to 1 (we prefer to stay off the Interstates, if possible).

The most interesting time, though, was when we saw a semi stuck under a bridge that indicated it was 13' 7". The semi was 13' 6", but the local DOT had repaved (over the existing asphalt) and didn't re-measure!

The trooper said to the truck driver, not enough clearance here huh. Truck driver said to the trooper, no sir, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of fuel.

When we had the IS suspension installed at the Mor Ride factory one of the things they do is measure the height of your camper so they can keep it the same height. We told then we thought it was 13.3 inches at the highest point..... We were wrong.... It was 12.9. They said we can make it that high if you wish or any height between 12.9 and 13.3...we said..keep it at 12.9 and so it is..
