Mattress Upgrade

We want to upgrade our RV mattress to be more like a real bed mattress. Has anyone upgraded. Where did you purchase.

In our TT we just went to our local mattress store and bought what suited us as we would if buying one for our home. A real mattress will be somewhat higher that the "thing" that is in the camper but it will be a whole lot better. We are transfering the store bought mattress to the new Montana.

We have a cheap "upgrade" by way of the memory foam topper. Works great.

We replaced the Monty mattress with a regular mattress. Special order at a mattress store for the shorter length. But no extra cost. Guy at the store says he sells at least 1 per week. Seems all RV's with bedroom slides (even A's) need the shorter length. As I have said before, I've seen the cheapy mattress even on the high end A's. BTW, we went to 3 store before we found the one that did the special order so don't give up.
Happy trails................

When you say shorter length how short do you mean. The Mattress we were planning to xfer to the Montana looks to be 75 inches long..Is that too long?????

We went with a regular queen size store bought Simmons Beautyrest mattress. It's 79" long but on the 2955 it butts up nice and tight against the dresser with no problem. Because we put this matt on the solid plywood we found it to be a bit firmer than our home bed. We added a feather topper to it and now it is sooooo nice!

We put our home queen mattress in for our 5 day trip we just finished - it was too long for putting in the slide on our 3295, but we slept so much better, when we got home today, we called The Matress Factory for a quote on a special made one at the correct length but with the same quality our home mattress has - we are going to check it out in person this week - we were told to bring in our current mattress and they could re-fit it, stuff it, or whatever they do - price quoted per our questions and request was between $500-$600 - about same as home mattress if not cheaper - I've seen wide range of prices - so shop around - call around - ask if one can be made and how long it takes - they told us 5 days tops. The ones that come with the Unit don't cut it, for sure...

Happy Hunting

We are lucky in that there is a company here in Elkhart called Elkhart Bedding. They are located on Sterling Avenue on the south side. We replaced the mattress in our Challenger with a short queen pillow top for about 270 bucks. On weekends when wife and I are in the coach we sleep better than on our bed at home. Must be due to the more relaxed atmosphere!?

What about linen? Won't the queen linen be to loose on the shorter mattress

We did the same as DarMar and bought the factory queen from Simmons. Fits fine. Yes it does lightly touch the dresser but the slide closes completely. Best thing we have ever done.

You can shorten the queen linen (fitted sheet) by sewing a tuck in the top of the sheet. This part goes under the pillows and is not seen or felt. See Sept. 05 Trailer Life 10 Minute Tech page 78.

I use the elastic garter type devices on the foot end of regular sized queen bottom sheets to keep the sheets tight on the RV size queen mattress - works fine.

We just switched out our inhome top mattress with the one in the monty. It makes for a snug fit when we close the slide, but does fit, and boy is it sooo... much more comfortable.

Just to update - I mentioned about going to the mattress factory a couple of days ago in this forum - well, we went today - ordered the mattress - will be made and installed in the 5th WheelMonday - $350 and they took our old mattress, so we didn't have to do something with it....they happen to supply one of the top RV Makers in this area with the same bed we bought - much better quality and they are putting extra support in sides and bottom end so that after sitting on it for a lot of times, the edges won't wear down so badly. Sounds like everyone has own ideas, and all of them work - I also use the tension devices on the corners for making the sheets fit better - works great - and for one who hates to sew - it's perfect...
