Supporting trailer from the hub
I'll be swapping out my Marathons in the next week or so and am looking for opinions on supporting the trailer by blocking up the hubs. I did a search here and didn't find anything specific, and I don't see a problem with it, but wanted to hear from you guys. Obviously I'm concerned about not damaging any components. I'll need to remove all the tires together and bring them down to the tire dealer for inspection as Goodyear is going to give me some credit toward the G614's. I would rather do the swap myself so I can grease the bearings at the same time. Besides, I'm concerned about anyone else jacking this thing up and the methods they may use. This particular place has a good reputation, but just the same, I won't be there when the work is done, more than likely. Getting back to my question, I know I can do it from the frame with cribbing but wanted to hear your opinions pro and con for blocking up under the hubs. Am I overlooking anything?

Nothing beats a good solid foundation. Your call on what is the best foundation, jack stands under the frame at four points or something small under the springs/axle. In making your decision remember, this isn't going to be a 15 minute job.

IF it was me, I would be cribbing the frame up, jacking the axles by the spring hangers at the ends of the axles and then supporting the axles with stacker jacks or similar after the tires are removed. Just my opinion, but I think this method would also be the safest, which is a strong consideration!

I just had G614s put on mine at a commercial Goodyear truck tire dealer. They gave me $60 for the Trailer King tires that came on the trailer. They wanted to jack all four tires at once using the axles, but I first suggested they do one side at a time using the frame. The guy was having trouble cribbing with his hydraulic jacks, so we ultimately did one wheel at a time with the jack very close to the wheel. These guys were not real thrilled about a fifth wheel owner trying to tell them how to do their jobs. Ended up costing $1100 bucks out the door with new metal stems, and they were not happy about slowing down the process. The manager insisted that it would be perfectly fine to have jacked all four axles up at once. I did not disconnect from the truck during the process.
The last time I made this switch 3 years ago, they gave me $80 for the Marathons which were on my 2011.
