3500 Dodge Towing

Hello Group,

Looking for a tow vehicle, I have found a '07 Dodge 6.7 DRW, 3.73. The charts say it is rated @13,800lbs, but I am seeing heavier loads behind it.

I am going to be towing about 16K 5th so would the 3.73 be enough or should I only consider 4.10 in that year range on the Dodge?

Thanks Jim

I suppose it's true, because they've raised the tow limits quite a bit in recent years and mine came from the factory with some extras, but it's hard to believe that my 2500 is rated for 23,500 and an 07 3500 is rated that much less.

My 2012 Ram DRW with 3.73 and max tow package has no problem with 16,500 or more behind it. GM only offers a 3.73 rear end on the Duramax... There are many folks out there both SRW and DRW towing with 3.73 and have had no issues. I chose the 3.73 as I drive my truck empty as much as I do loaded and I am more concerned with fuel economy than being the first one off the line when loaded.

You are looking at my exact truck. I would not have a problem hooking up to that weight. Have to remember the 07 1/2 has the 6 speed tranny which I think helps offset the lack of 4.10 gears.

You may be looking at the tow rating, it is not used when figuring weight ratings for a 5th wheel. That truck is probably rated at about 23-24k gross [truck and load]. [About 14k gross 5er is at the upper limit for most drw's though.] My 06 is rated at 23k. My 04.5 had the 3.73 and had no problem with a 38' Montana. You will probably be ok with any Montana depending on how much you take with you, although at the upper limit with the larger models.

We don't have any problems towing our rig with the 3.73 rear end. Actually very happy with the combo.

Tow ratings are a joke...they are based on an empty truck, not one loaded down with people, gear and the pin weight from a 15k RV. Here are the numbers to figure the correct towing capacity:

The tow rating is the lower of:

1. GCWR minus RV's actual loaded weight.

2. Hitch capacity.

jlb27537 you don't say if the truck you are looking at is a SB or LB, my daughter has an 07 SB - DRW, the GVWR on hers is 10,500 lbs, she has 3.73 rear end and tows a 16,000 GVWR horse trailer with no problems.

I am 800 miles into a trip from BC, Canada to Yuma in a 2012 - DRW - LB with 3.73 rear end. It has pulled fine on hills hauling a gross weight of 24,140 lbs, truck and 2012 - 3402RL Montana. GVWR on the 2012 DWR - LB is 12,300.

The fuel economy is terrible and at least 4 mpg less than what I got with my 01' Dodge hauling the same weight.

My daughter has removed the exhaust garbage and chipped her truck and gets better mileage and a bit more torque at a lower RPM. That will happen to mine one of these days.

You would have no problem towing any of the Montana's but you must watch the GVWR on both truck and RV.
