Why us men-folk do not throw anything away

I know I hear it all the time when the DW goes on a cleaning spree, and it leaves me defending my choice to hang on to something that at the time makes her wonder what we need that for. I got a little validation this afternoon. Our first portable ice-maker was a "Royal" brand that was sold through Camping World. It died a few years ago after a years use and fortunately for us (at least we thought) we had an extended service plan that replaced it. The replacement lasted about a year as well so it was relegated to a place in the back of the storage room for no reason other than I couldn't bring myself to throw it away. Since that time we have purchased an Emerson (camper use) and a Magic Chef, the latter we have been using in the stickhouse for a couple of years. A couple of months ago it decided that it did not want to dump the ice into the tray and I got to thinking today that I had read a post on the forum about a simple switch replacement that had remedied someone else's ice-maker failure. Well, it turns out that the old Camping World ice-maker and the Magic Chef are exactly the same ice-maker with a different logo on them. After a little investigating, I found a limit switch on the side of the ice-maker after removing the cover that was not switching and it turns out controlled the ice dumping mechanism. Replaced it with the one from the Royal ice-maker and the Magic Chef is spitting out ice once again. That is why us men-folk do not throw anything away and it is why we use the MOC forum as the basis for our repairs! Thanks MOC, for coming through again, I only wish I knew who posted the first ice-maker thread since I owe him a Thank You!!

Hey Bingo, it certainly sounds like it paid off for ya to hang on to it. I have been doing just the opposite lately. I’ve been trying to rid our house of 30+ years of accumulation, maybe I should have posted a photo of our attic. NAAA, don’t think so! Been going through things and trashing some things, recycling other things or simply donating them to charities. I’ve shredded papers that are approximately 15 years old or older. Working on getting rid of things we simply no longer have a need for. Sort of enjoy the extra room!

That was my post, replacement switches are available at Radio Shack. Just take an old one with you.

I remembered the post and owe you a big Thank You. I was fortunate to have the same limit switches in the old ice maker. I now still have another spare. On the previous one, the entire units front panel went haywire, so I now have some spare parts on hand. Good to know about Radio Shack in the event we are on the road and something similar happens.

I confess, I was trying to hide the hillbilly by saying we had a storage room instead of a porch! You oughta see what else I refuse to throw away!!

Here is a link to parts including the front control panel in case you want to fix your "spare" I found those OEM switches to be of poor quality so having spares would be handy.

Seems like everytime I throw something away, I end up buying another!

Not me. I don't have much storage room. If I haven't used it in the last six months, I get rid of it. Then the next morning I go out and buy the spare I threw away yesterday. Seems that way.

Another anomaly I discovered along the way with my fool proof system, is that if I have a spare then I won't need it. So following that logic, I guess I would be better off keeping everything, then nothing would break. I think I'm on to something. Thanks for the post.
