The 2nd set of numbers is referred to as the group number (the first set is the area and the last is referred to as the serial number.) Regardless, since we just went through our annual 1098 (education expense) mailing, and doing a quick check of numbers between myself, my wife, my daughter, and grandkids (all even numbers), Chris' comment made me curious. So I went out to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employ.../highgroup.txt and checked the Feb 2009 numbers. There are several group 55 sets of ssn's issued so far this month.

Don't know where or exactly when -- we simply use the site to see if #s provided us by students are reasonably good for IRS 1098 reporting purposes.

My middle two numbers are: one is odd, the other is 0. Does that mean I qualify as having odd numbers in the middle?

Well, I stated in an earlier post about a site that you can generate a credit card.

Credit Card Generator

Just get a card writer and put it on any blank card, then scan it at any Wally-world. Of course, then go to jail when/if the catch you.

I really could not believe this site was still active.

If I can find it on a "credit card hack" search, anyone can.

It's a sick, sick world.

EDITED: PLEASE DO NOT CHECK YOUR NUMBER ON THE WEB SITE POSTED. THERE IS NO TELLING IF THEY HARVEST THEM. PLAY WITH PHONEY NUMBERS.

I try and watch ours closely. Last year we had two fraudulent charges on our debit card. I didn’t even notice it until one of them had been credited back. When I started investigating it I discovered they were phone calls from the Middle East to somewhere in NY. How did that information get to them I’ll never know!

I disputed it but I had to file a police report. Long story short! My bank is in one state and I live in another. The police depts. in both states gave me a hard time in not wanting to file a police report. I finally got one and was able to get our money back and get it settled.

We where hit for $18,000. It has been a nightmare and keeps going on and on.... Court case recently scheduled in the smack middle of our Florida vacation. After numerous calls finally got it changed. We where lucky Discover caught the thief and notified us. We quickly ran a credit check and found the $18,000. They had also tried 5 other credit cards with no luck. We have been able to get it successfully off but only if we where willing to press charges. Which we had no issues with until it interupted our vacation and they demanded we had to be there no exceptions. We will be glad when it is behind us.

As we can see by the number of folks here who have had the experience once the subject came up, this is more of problem than I thought it was. We do use "true credit" a a safeguard but I am thinking that is not good enough. We are looking into "lifelock" or something similar. We almost never use a credit card. Our debit card is with our local bank at home that has many safeguards. But this thread has alerted me to how widespread the problem may be. We can not afford to do nothing.

We were hit once and that was enough. We now use Lifelock and do not have any more "pre-approved" credit cards and similar junk mail with personal info sent to us. We do not know how long this will work but we do feel safer now.

As Bill stated, file a police report. It has to be in the jurisdiction that the crime was committed, and fraudulent use of credit cards is a crime. As stated on the FTC web site, i the local police absolutely refuse to file a report, go to the state police. That usually will get the local police involved. It is imperative that you file a police report. It will be necessary to prove that your card was fraudulently used and "clear your name."

Here is a very informative site on identity theft: Federal Trade Commission

What does lifelock cover and how much is it? (I will go to their site and look, just wondering how it works, Jim and Carol.)

It costs us $18/month, $9 each. They do what we could do ourselves but it is all taken care of by them. That way we know it will be done right. They also say they will cover $1,000,000 of false charges. It is worth the cost to us to feel easier. We also like the people that endorse it, Rush and Paul Harvy. Why don't credit card companies like it? I was talking with Discover the other day about something else and mentioned that I had Lifelock and he immediately began berating it to try to sell me their own version of the same.

They do not like it because it imposses oversight on them. Google around .The reasons they are not liked are interesting as well as who does not like them.

My daughters debit card and about 100 others were hit about 2 weeks ago. Her bank notified her and told her to cut her card up and they would send a new one. Someone hacked into the banks online account...now that is scary!

Actually that happened to us a couple of years ago. Our local bank thought that maybe some accounts had been compromised and rather that take a wait and see attitude they replaced everyones cards before there might have been a problem. That is one of the bank safeguards I was talking about.

We caught them using our C/C, and notified the Card company on both occasions. The card was canceled when we notified them. We then received two new cards. Thats the reason we had two different C/C from two different institutions. GBY...

This topic has raised my awareness on this subject.I am surprised that here has been so many hits on a small number of folks(MOC'ers).
Probabilities would indicated this is a far greater problem than I thought. I thought We were well protected. We now have second thoughts. We will probably go over to lifelock. In fact I spoke to our local bank at home Friday and they said that was a good dea.
