Battery disconnect

We are going to have our Montana 37FL closed up for 6 months before using it again. Should we merely use the battery disconnect switch or take the battery cables off the posts while in non-use?? Any suggestions or experience would be helpful.

The battery disconnect only interrupts power from the batteries to the inside panel. There is other loads being fed off of the other breaker on the wall behind the batteries that will continue to be powered, so yes, just remove the ground wire from the batteries and that will stop all the drains from the batteries. If this is something you do often, you could also install a blade type switch in the ground cable and would only need to open that up instead.

6 months is a long time to let batteries sit. Either put a trickle charger on them in place, or take them out to somewhere that they can be trickle charged.

They make some nice solar trickle chargers now. As Bob said, remove the ground cable to keep from discharging the batteries. A trickle charger will keep your batteries ready to go when you get back. Landing jacks and slides really pull power.

We have two Monty's with two batteries in each and both sit for 6 months with the ground wire disconnected with no issues. I just make sure they are fully charged and then disconnect the ground and don't worry about it.

I also let my rig sit for up to 6 or 7 months and have no problem I completely disconnect the battery and have it at full charge. No problems. Can raise the rig to hitch up with no problem.

I don't go to Arizona anymore, so I take both batteries out and put in garage for the winter and use my battery charger every couple of months to keep charged up.

Suggest "battery maintainer" rather than a trickle charger. A maintainer stops electric flow when a battery is fully charged but a trickle charger keeps charging (overcharging) when a battery is fully charged.

What is a "battery maintainer"?

It keeps your battery charged at the optimal charge. A plain trickle charger keeps charging regardless.

Suggest Googling top 10 battery maintainers.

I once ruined a battery connecting a simple trickle charger.

Battery Maintainer

I use a ProMariner maintainer, model PRO Sport HD12 which is a true maintainer, typically used by boat owners to keep their batteries fresh. It works very well. The latest generation can be found at Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/ProMariner-Pr...62635728&psc=1 or at places like Bass Pro Shop. I highly recommend this, never a problem.

I just leave my Montana plugged in through the winter and have never had. Problem.

Depends on the trickle charger. Mine does not have a constant charge. Only charges at 2 amp max when charging low charged batteries. Maintains at 1 amp. Shuts off at 100% charge. Comes on if battery drops to 97%. I leave it on whenever in storage. Never an issue. I would recommend to the OP to install a blade cut off switch on the negative battery cable. Never have to mess with the off switch in the convenience center.
