Gee, I haven't heard anyone say they wished they were still working! LOL
The only issue with retirement I can think of is $$$$. Nothing in (or not much) and still money out!!

Someone from the office asked me right before I left, How do you know when you have enough money so you can retire? How do you plan for that.

It took no thought at all to fire back an answer. The answer is: You never have "enough" money." You just do it, and make it work.

I did advise him to pay off ALL his debt before retiring. If you have no debt, you can actually live pretty cheap (if 'cheap" is a valid word any more these days.

However, if you have debt, then you need to make sure you have enough income coming in somewhere to cover your debt. So, if you plan for retirement, get yourself out of debt first and then stay out of debt. If you do that first, you can function off a lot less income and live happy and successful.

You really have to plan ahead, don't think SSI will give you enough unless you live on a "Self Sufficient Farm". I was putting the max percent into a 401K for over 32 years and the last few years when the Gov increased the limits I was putting in 1/3 of my gross into the account. Now with my Minimum Required Distribution and both of our SSI we do pretty much we want to without much money worries.

SS will provide us with all we need. We live in a small energy efficient home with every thing paid for in a inexpensive part of the country. If we lived in New York or California or a lot other places we couldn’t live on our SS. We couldn’t buy new cars and campers but we could get by and be comfortable.
We know people with modest homes that their taxes are as much as our SS.

Our approach was to be able to maintain our standard of living. We didn't want to scrimp in retirement years as everything gets more expensive and it doesn't leave much room for big ticket emergencies. Contentment is indeed a blessing.

Dutch, Congratulations on your retirement. Looks like you've planned very well and that is the secret that allows you to enjoy your family.
I took a silver bullet early retirement package at age 52. The next morning, I woke up and thought, "what the heck have I done?". That lasted about 10 minutes. I had lined up another job, since I was too young to stop working, but it was in a completely different field and gave me new energy. Also, it was a job I really didn't need so there was absolutely no stress. At 58 I retired again for real now that our youngest had finished college. After that I did a bit of part time work for a friend in his business while waiting for DW to retire.
Two of our three kids had moved south, so we bought a 5th wheel and now spend our winters bouncing between them and enjoying our grand kids. Life is good.
One last tip for you:
"Never put off to tomorrow that which you can leave to the day after tomorrow"

Congratulations on making it to that big day. I retired at the end of 2019 after 42 years in the SYP lumber manufacturing business. I too was worried as to how much I would miss it but I have never regretted the decision to retire. We lost 3 immediate family members in a 5 month period which led me to not hesitate pulling the trigger on retiring. Each day we have with family and loved ones is a blessing. Keep the faith and enjoy those golden years and your RV travels. God Bless and stay safe.
