Ford Built In Trailer Brake Control

We have a chronic problem indicating the trailer brakes are not working at times. The red light will bleep and beep when going over a bumpy road. Have had it looked at four times various places and no one seems to find the problem. Trailer was rewired once three years ago and we again have the same problem. Anyone have similar problem? Thanks

Greetings, just something to try. I took an old bicycle inner tube and cut 1/2" rings out of it (like calamari) I took one of these rubber rings and put it over the cable then stretch it over the spring loaded recepticle cover to hold it tight against the plug. Have been doing this for years with no connection problem. Worth a try. Good Luck

Had a problem which sounds similar. In our case the trailer-disconnected message popped up and wouldn't go away. A mobile repair tech found there was a continuity problem with the connector in the bed of the truck, but there was no problem with the connector down by the hitch. His explanation was the the bed connector isn't OEM so it isn't part of the original Ford wiring. His theory (which proved to be right) was that there was probably a loose connection in one of the wires that were attached to the original wiring harness in order to connect the after market connector in the bed. So for the next many miles I just connected to the connector by the hitch till I could get the repair done.

If your problem is similar, just try moving to that original Ford-installed connector and see if things get better. If they do, then you (or someone) will have to 'get out and get under' to repair the flakey connection going to the connector in the bed. Odds are good that the installation wasn't done with solder so corrosion is likely what's causing a problem.

Had an after-market receptacle wired into the bed of my F-350. There was no real wiring to be done. The harness "T" connected to the original harness at a joint near the rear end and then ran up to the new outlet, all connections were sealed so only inspection is to cut it apart - if it's loose the little guys in China didn't make the joints right.

ps have had no problems with it as yet.

Ford has a message in thier computers very nicely placing the blame on the trailers. I went through this problem many times, one more then one type of trailer, to the extreme of them blaming me for possibly soda spilling on the unit..um who were the idiots who put it right next to the drink holder? At this time I had it happening with my Logan horse trailer. Called Logan dealer and they said, nope, it's the brake controller. I sold the truck, but was close to just installing a normal brake controller and disconnecting the on board model. Nothing scarier then stopping with a trailer and the brakes going out from this issue..too close of call.
