TOWING BEHIND
We are awaiting delivery of our new Montana and want to tow our boat behind it. Has anyone else been doing this and if so, have you had any problems?

How large is the boat (weight and length)?
What state/states are you going to be double trailering in?

You would be messing with the warranty from Keystone. They only want, no more than 200 lbs, towed behind their trailers. The hitch they put on is not made for actually pulling anything, just a bicycle rack.

It is not just the bumper weight that is a problem. The frame is also a consideration. As indicated pulling something on the rear of the rig will cause a problem with the warranty. Having said that I have seen some major items being pulled behind the Monty. I would not do it and I would avoid being near anyone who is so pulling.
Good luck.

WE have been towing a small flat trailer with two 4x4 quads for three years now with no issues at all.
The total weight is less than 2000 lbs.

Many folks tow behind in many brands of Rv. We have seen some nightmares on the road. You can cause damage to the frame and most if not all RV manufacturers
will void warranty if you do. We are already 53 feet plus long and another 20 or so feet behind us would make me feel uncomfortable not to mention exceeding the length requirements in many states.
Bottom line is we choose not to tow behind.

Yes, we just saw a 5ver pulling a boat on a trailer behind it and the hitch broke and he lost the trailer with the boat. Fortunately the trailer and boat went into the ditch and didn't affect traffic (except for the "looky loos"). Both boat and trailer suffered a lot of damage.
I wouldn't tow anything behind mine.

The nearest Monty dealer to us actually takes the factory hitch assembly off and welds a whole new set up back there for those who want to tow. We made the decision not to do it and sold our motorcycle and Joyce drives the car behind.

I know it sounds stupid but better safe than sorry! I'd be towing the boat with the car or some other vehicle than take the possibility of voiding your warranty on your unit! Some have put a heavier hitch on the back on their Montes but that still does not make it OK with the manufacturer for towing. While at the Fall Rally this has been brought up to Keystone numerous times and they are thinking of putting a larger hitch receiver on BUT it has been noted it is not for towing another trailer but for heavier hitches for the bicycle/s or a possible carrier for generators and etc.
They are putting a larger frame under the new units but that still does not make it safe to hook something like a boat behind.

Well if Keystone is really upgrading all Montys to a 12 inch frame, maybe they could install a hitch that could be used for towing a small boat. Our SOB with a 12 inch frame comes equipped with a 2 inch receiver hitch, rated to tow 3000 lbs with a max 300 Lbs tongue weight.

I've been doing it for 15 years now and never a problem with any rig. Just be sure the hitch is up to the task and you are up to it. Some states you need a special licence. Got to be on your guard a little more.

If you stay away from the east coast where most of the no triple tow laws are you should be OK.

Crestview RV here in San Antonio will send you to a welder they use to put a new hitch on. I did this and have towed my jeep to Colorado and back with no problems. Over the years I have towed motorcycles, 4 wheelers, side by sides, boats, with no problems. These were towed behind wilderness and carrilite fifth wheels. Need to be sure you have a good hitch. Flat towing jeep puts little to no wieight on trailer, it only adds the pulled weight to the frame. I have a camera on back of 5ver so I can watch jeep. Certainly not for everybody. I knew when I added hitch, frame warranty went bye bye. When we reach the mountains we disconnect jeep and my wife drives it.

It is interesting that the Montana's hitch is 200# while the Redwood has a 2" Receiver Hitch w/3000 lb Towing Capacity and is listed in http://www.redwood-rv.com/products/r...ndards-options
