Diesel Fuel Sys Cleanout

I have a 2016 Chevrolet 3500HD Diesel dually with 58,000 miles. Im getting ready to take a 1300 mile trip, driving straight through. A friend of mine suggested I add a diesel fuel system cleanout fluid/cleaner to the fuel. He said to add this stuff every time I stop for fuel that way the fuel system will be constantly cleaned for 1300 miles. Makes sense to me but what fuel system cleaner is best for this trip? Should I bother with it because as far as I know the fuel system is working fine. My friend says you want to be sure the injectors are clean. I changed the fuel filter out a year and a half ago. Thanks for your input.

I do not use additives. Just make sure your filters are changed and you get good diesel Like from flying j or travel amereica as they go through a lot of fuel and it stays fresh. Remember that water is the biggest enemy of your fuel rail.

I run Lucas fuel injector cleaner every 2nd or 3rd fill up consistently. Does it work.
Heck I don't know, but in all of Cummins diesels, 6 over the years, each topping out at over 225K miles. I've never had an injector issue. When my trucks were running stock fuel filter systems I would change filter every other oil change. Every 15 - 20k miles. Now that I am running an aftermarket Caterpillar fuel filter and seperator system that filters down to 4 microns. I change all filters once a year. In my opinion, if you plan on keeping your truck for a while. The aftermarket filter system will do the most good for you injectors. If not frequent filter changes are best.

We have used Archoil ever since we did the Bulletproofing on our truck. Not that expensive and easy to add at every fill up.

I use power service. To clean your system for the trip yeah why not. There’s also another reason I use it. It has lubrications additives, which will lubricator the cp4 fuel pump since the low sulfur fuel lacks some lubrication. I should be specific, the Chevy cp4 fuel pump. Ford uses the same one but they applied a coating to their pump and don’t have the fuel pump issues. It’s a small percentage of trucks that have the fuel pump problem but for me it’s cheap insurance.

I don't know if I need it or not but the Cummins Diesel mechanic suggested 12 oz's of CRC Diesel Therapy every other fill up. He's a big believer in it and works on these rigs every day. Figure he knows a lot more than I do so I follow his advice. 150k miles and no injector issues. I buy it by the gallon at NAPA, think it's around 35 to 40 bucks. I changed my filter about every 15K miles.

I am far from a diesel expert...so I WISH I knew what I was talking about. With that qualification...

I would think about changing your filter before the trip. I replace the fuel filter per their recommendations (every 15k miles or so) but 15,000 miles comes quick for me since this truck WAS my daily driver...but now with the covid work stop I don't know how long it would take me to hit 15k miles on the filter. Maybe someone else here will know if "age" is a factor for GM fuel filters...but 18 months on a filter sounds like a lot to me.

I change my fuel filters every 3rd oil change (15000 miles), and use Power Service when I think about it, but usually on trips a couple tanks get it. Seems to help mileage a little also. I also use the Power Service with anti gel during the winter.

New fuel filters about every 15-18K miles and usually add some Power Service additive on a trip at least and whenever I remember.

The Ford filters also have a water drain that is supposed to be opened for a few seconds every month but usually forgotten, especially in the winter when the truck is seldom driven. If the GM and Ram have similar, they too need to be drained occasionally. Then of course, buy your fuel where there is good turnover of product

Have used Power Service consistently over the life of four Ford 350 diesels. I change the fuel filters every 10K and bleed the water separator every time I change the oil.

We have been using diesel clean since day one. It was recommended by Ford. Filters are changed at the recommended intervals.

I have used additives since day one. Recommended by my mechanic (Son-in-law) and change oil and filters when indicated. This is my 3rd truck with over 250000 on the first 2.

Usually before a long 5er pull I'll add Ford C-tane and Power Booster to the fuel. Never anything else on all my Fords without a problem.

In the trucks, we used to use PS, white in winter, silver in summer. Then Lucas came along, and now only use it. In the Duramax, 1 lucas every 3rd tank, and always put 1 in the xtra bed tank, as it sits waiting on those long no station stretches, so might get some moisture. I also run the CAT adaptor and filter, as theyre 20$, instead of $45 Delcos, and lots better. Check out the Dmax store for duramax info, best there is,, thats all they do, really good people.

Take it to your GM dealer, they have fuel cleaning system that will clean out your fuel system of any sludge, it is not cheap, but it is a must. GM and Ram are being sued over fuel pump issues with their engines. The problem is they use a pump made in Europe that doesn't react well to the US formulated Diesel fuel. Going to a GM dealer to have your system cleaned may good insurance against failure, which has been reported to be a total shut down of the engine.
