Tinting shower skylight

Anyone tint their shower skylight or have some sort of shade for it? It let's a lot of heat in during middle of day in summer. Any ideas? Thanks

I have just a thought, I believe the skylights are 2 parts meaning the part on the roof and another part that screws in from the shower side right? I may need to go look. As someone in the painting/ coatings industry for too long I would think you would want something to block the light and heat but not be permanent on the plastic. With that in mind something like plasti-dip might be a solution. Remove the inner skylight prep coat and reinstall. I think I would coat the roof skylight then reinstall the shower portion. White would keep down the heat and still let a little bit of light in. And the best part is if you change your mind about wanting more light then just take off the inner portion and peel off the coating.

My 3 cents for what it’s worth....

On both of our Montys we went to Home Depot and got window treatments (like the tint for cars) that make them look like stained glass and applied it to the outer window.

I took an unusual approach. I wanted to retain most of the light from the skylight but wanted to diminish the heat associated with it. I simply stood in the shower and dropped the inner section of skylight then used one of my puppy's pee-pee pads to place between the inner and outer sections of the skylight. It covered the section totally, looks professional and it works fantastic!! Plus it looks great from the inside - the light is defused and the heat from the sunlight is gone. In place for over a year now with no problems - did I mention cheap!.

I was thinking of putting a light coat of paint on the outside - diminish the UV damage on material and defuse light. Might use the window tint idea on the exterior - might do both - would take some time cutting to get it to lay flat

I painted the outside of mine. Just a light coat and still allows some lite in.

We still have some of this from use in our Airstream, mainly to lessen distractions from our then puppy. How effective is it really in lessening heat from the sun?

It has lessened the heat, but unsure by how effective it really is until this summer. But I have noticed a difference so far.

Was it hard applying it to the curved surface?

No it's no harder to install than any window tint. We used the stained glass look on skylight and a dark tint on the glass in the cabinet doors so you can't see what's in the cabinets.

We did the same thing with the stuff from Home Depot. It still lets quite a bit of light in, but it does look nice. The other good thing about it is the fact that it is not permanent, which means a future owner of the trailer can make changes.

In one trailer we used to own, I put some curtain block-out material on the skylight. The skylights have an inner part and an outer part. You can easily remove the inner part by taking out the screws. Then you can do what you want with it.

Another trailer we owned I put Reflectix on it. Both the block-out material and the Reflectix completely blocked out the light (and heat), but neither were permanent.

As stated above, was very simple to install over the curved light.

I`m currently looking at options for our cabinet doors. They have a "frosted" glass, and very easily nicks/chips, so I want something that helps alleviate that issue.

I removed the inside part of the skylight and had the local auto window tinter do it up. Works fine.

I went to an auto parts store and purchased a spray that car buffs use to darken the taillight lenses. I don't remember the exact name but it worked well. Took the inner lens off and sprayed the side that faces up. I did a light coat so if needed I could put another coat on. The lighter coat darkens the bathtub area enough that we don't need to put a second coat on. When looking up, it looks a lot like a cloudy sky.

I removed the inside section of the sky light and applied window tint. You all might laugh at this but in an earlier thread, somebody recommended putting one inch bubble wrap between the inner and outer sections. I tried it and it really reduces the heat without reducing light. It worked so well, I also did the same thing on the sky light in the kitchen above the island.

I use the quilted metal insulation on skylights and windows to insulate and darken our rigs. Use Velcro to put it up. Easy on easy off!

We found that the quilted foil insulation that C/W sells for the entry door fit our skylight perfectly and was easy to install using velcro. When we want light in the shower we just take it down and store it in a closet.
