Washington DC
We are planning a trip to DC and would appreciate recommendations on where to camp, route in and around, buses and trains, what to see and so on. We want to park somewhere for a week and take a train in on several days. We are in route now. Left Elkhart IN on Sunday and in Ohio now (went to SOB in Jackson Center today). Thinking about taking highway 50 across WV to see some sights if the road is not bad.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Cherry Hill and Capitol KOA both offer shuttle service to public transportation/Metro. DO NOT drive Rt. 50 across WV. Steep, narrow, and switchback city unless you want a real challenge and adventure. I would even go that way in my TV. They don't call WV "The Mountain State" for nothing! Others may disagree. Just MHO.

We have been very happy with Cherry Hill CG when we have gone to DC. The metro station is a short drive or you can use the camground services to get there.

Hello
My wife & I spent 5 days at thje Capital KOA in Millersville last month with our two nieces.
Mostly Pull-Thru sites in the open and right off I-97.
We drove to the New Carrolton Metro station (Orange Line) and it was about a half-hour to downtown Washington from there.
There is a parking lot across from the station for larger vehicles (Ford F-350 DRW) which cost $3.00 per day
We will stop there again.

Cherry Hill Campground is the closest campground to Washington DC. We really enjoyed it and the free busses leave the campground 3 times a day. We enjoyed the Hop On Hop Off trolly for visiting spots in the area.

We decided against Hwy 50 across WV and selected a more northern route including part of the old national highway, now Hwy 40 in PA.
We appreciate the feedback on Cherry Hill and the KOA. Has anyone stayed at Travel Trailer Village at Prince William Forest Park, Dumfries, VA? It is a farther drive to the train station, but about half the cost.

mobrownies,
Another alternative is taking Rt 50 in WV until you meet I-79 at Bridgeport, then take I-79 north until you hit I-68 east at Morgantown. I-68 is a little hilly but very scenic, including a road-cut with a geologic feature known as a syncline. Here is a web-site detailing the area:
http://www.geocities.com/kenlazara/syncline.htm
I-68 will take you to I-70 leading towards DC.
Hope this helps,
Bingo

we did go on 50 across West Va this spring--beautiful scenery--very hilly but we sent slow and were fine--we were glad we had the Duramax.

Just an update on our trip to DC.
We took your advice and stayed at Cherry Hill Park in College Park MD. Nice park for an urban area with good facilities. They were very knowledgable about touring the City and make it easy. The Metro Bus stops in the park to take you to the Metro Rail into the City. Spent a week there and went into the City 4 long days and still didn't see everything, but all we could handle for now. We spent between 1 and 2 hours each way getting into the City depending on how long we had to wait on a bus.
We then went to the Trailer Village at Prince Williams Forrest Park which is part of the National Park System. It is a nice park and a lot cheaper than Cherry Hill. It is about a 16 mile drive to the nearest Metro station, which could take a long time during rush hours. Not sure what parking would be like as we did not go into the City from there, although many in the Park were going in. We visited Mt. Vernon and the Marine Corp Museum at Quantico. We both thouhgt that the Corp museum was great and I'd recommend it to anyone.

We stayed 18 days at Cherry Hill in '06 and highly recommend it. Bus comes into park to transport to subway system and that is the ONLY way to travel into DC area. Park is nice with lots of amenities. Somewhat pricey, but everything in DC is!
