air conditioner

On our last weekend trip. We went to southern CO. It was very hot and I think the humidity was more than what we have here. Anyway our air conditioner was not cooling as well as should because it was freezing up. We didn't realize this until it begin to get warm inside. It was turned on high. After it thawed out. I turned it on at a lower setting. Seemed to work better. Is this right that it would freeze like that? Or is something wrong? It kept the coach cooler on a lower setting then it did on high.

Dusty and Don -

We were just in southern Colorado and they typically have very low humidity. I agree with the others, I think you may have a differnt problem. There is a sensor that checks for freeze up and will automatically shut the unit down and then go back up. If you had replaced the thermostat, like we did several times, it could be the sensor isn't seated properly in the fins. If you go inside the A/C vent in the living area, you will see the freeze sensor going up into the fins. One thing to check anyway. I'm sure our resident HVAC experts will be along shortly.

a few things could cause freeze up. usually blocked air flow from dirty filters and fins. make sure everything is clear and clean. it is better to run the unit on high.(one mans opinion anyway)

Many have reported freezing with the "quick cool" vent open. It seems to suck in the cold air and freeze the coil.

We had the "quick cool" vent open. I am really confused now. I called some service people that Dometic told me to call and they said if it only did it one time it could be a weather problem. It was extremely hot. Well, over 100 degrees and there was some humidity, because our thermometer said it was high humidity. This was in extreme southeastern CO. near Lamar on a lake.
The temperature was around 106.

We too have had issues with our A/C unit freezing up, then leaking all over the darned place. I've had it in three times for the same problem (first time thought it was just a leak!) and no resolution so far. I'm going to take it in one more time to the dealer, and if it doesn't solve the problem I'm hoping to get an answer out of the factory techs at the Great Lakes rally in September...

Sometimes I wonder if those 15000 btu units just don't work so well ducted...

We had the same problem freezing up, but no problems now. What we found was first it was pulling air from the attic, where the wires go through the trusses was open. We used duck-tape and closed it up. Second, the cold air output was leaking past the foil tape which was pumping in cold air in the return, so I used foil tape to close it up and it has been working great now. Just hoped this would help someone as that's what I found in my unit. Happy Camping Larry & LaVonne

Thanks all. I printed these off so we can check each suggestion that was mentioned. Our Monty is parked on our property so won't be a problem, can check it anytime.

Cruizin2 -

We had an issue that ours wasn't cooling as well as I thought it should and our dealer found exactly the same thing. Repaired with duct tape and worked much better. There shouldn't be any gaps in there.
