Neat site, even if you don't want to camp at some of the place, some of these old towns and places would be great to visit. Thanks for posting it, I bookmarked it.

We go through that part of the country several times a year. This last trip we took a route that went within just a few miles of the location Illapah listed.

We turned south at Barstow and then east near the Joshua Tree National Park. That was route 247 from Barstow down to Yucca Valley and then hwy 62 east to Parker, AZ.

At Twenty Nine Palms the terrain starts looking very desolate. If you're looking for solitude then this is the place! We were lucky to catch the desert just east of Twenty Nine Palms in full bloom! It was gorgeous!
