Spindle Nut Retainer Loose

What the heck could cause a bearing nut retainer to allow the nut to back off 1/4"? I was running thru maintenance and found one wheel very loose. Maybe 1/4" end play. The bearing cup had come off completely and was loose in the wheel center cover but not damaged.

If somehow it's something I did last year when doing bearing service, then it went on over 1200 miles. I did not care for the new type retainer then and really don't now. The E-Z Lube spindle does not have a hole for a cotter pin.

Pretty scary since we had just returned from Christmas vacation and are planning upcoming trips.Cleaned and inspected bearing, race and spindle finding nothing unusual - no scaring, discoloration or wear marks. That amazed me. It must have not been loose very long. I see nothing about the retainer that would allow the nut to loosen. I ordered 4 new ones and will compare when they get here. Any ideas?

There's a remote possibility you didn't get the rear seal all the way over the seal step on the spindle when you put the wheel back on last year. The seal only goes over that step about 1/4" +/-. If that was so and you followed up by tightening the nut "wrist tight" like many of us do ... it would have felt OK at the time if you didn't yank back and forth on the wheel. The steel nut retainer that has long replaced a cotter key actually makes a pretty positive hold on the nut unless one just bends the locking arms way out taking them off wrong. Being similar to spring steel, they generally just pop off with little effort from a screwdriver. What did the grease seal look like?

When i still had the regular axles, I was real concerned about the retainer as well, so I paid extra attention to torquing to make sure everything was well seated before I loosened the nut and then finger tightened. Had one retainer that didn't appear "right" to me and it did fall off as I was doing my work. I re-installed and it never let go after that.

Hey Dieselguy, that's an interesting thought. I see what you're talking about with that last shoulder. The two times I've had these rotors off, I've pretty much slammed them on when re-installing on the spindle. And have always made sure to do that "50ft lb" torque thing while spinning and then loosen & finger tight. I've always wondered if they meant finger tight for Conan the Barbarian or Padme from Attack of the Clones. The seal looked okay except for a tiny bit of grease seepage near it. Going to re-assemble tomorrow with new seal and grease.

This site, along with the video gives a very good description of adjusting the bearings, and it will apply to all tapered roller bearings, not just Timken. I’ve never used a dial indicator to check the adjustment, even though I have one in storage. I just grab the drum or rotor and feel for a bit of movement and call it good. Those spring retainers for the nut are needed because they are using these axles that can be greased through the end. https://www.knowyourparts.com/techni...-hub-assembly/
