12ply -F Rated tires? Montana HC 281CK

Receiving our new Montana HC 281CK in Feb 2021. First time 5th wheel owner.
Should I have these tires changed out before I pick up our new 5th wheel? And drive home?

If so. What are the best tires to get for this 5th wheel?

Appreciate the advice.
Happy Thanksgiving

A HC 281CK is a new model that may have 6K axles and 6 lug wheels that are not rated for anything more then 80psig. While there aren't a lot of well branded 'F' tires available, you can opt for Goodyear Endurance or Sailun but inflated to 80 psig (yes, folks, their inflation charts show a load rating at 80psig) There are Michelin and Bridgestone LTs that are also rated for trailer use. Our 343RL has 'E' LTs on it and have had since new (30K trouble free miles) but the 'tire and weight police' will tell you I'm a bad person.

First off, I would ask the dealer what axle rating and what wheels will be on the unit along with the tire brand. You then may be able to have him specify a tire that has a real and known brand reputation, not some oddly named off brand "China Bomb".

Remember that a stiffer sidewall will mean a harsher ride for the RV. These thing bounce around enough already. I am not a fan of 120 PSI tires ether. Way to hard and the position of the shock absorbers isn't very good in the first place. Another thing. The higher the air pressure in the tire the bigger the explosion when they blow. No matter how many tires that people recommend nothing is perfect. No tire is perfect. They all may fail at some time or not.

I have had Goodyears fail on my car.

I would just leave the tires on the RV and take it for a shake down run close to home and see what needs to be fixed and go from there. Tires would be down the list for me but hey it's your $1,200

The Keystone website says the spec for the axles are 6k Dexter Gladiator thick wall. If it comes with F rated tires it may be like mine; 8 lug wheels rated for 110psi (Ranier F range tires were 95psi).

They don't give weight specs but figure it will probably be in the 14k gvw range. From what I've seen and heard the Raniers have been coming on the HC units. Just talked to a guy here in the park that has a 19 331rl like mine and he said one of his Raniers failed straight away. He replaced with Endurance LRF. I replaced mine with Sailun S637s LRG.

You sure about that? Goodyear Endurance "F" range?

They only list "E" on their web site. Would love to find an "F" range tire
made in USA.

That's what he told me. He said he was waiting for the tires and a mobile person to come install them. Saw day before yesterday that the odd wheel from the spare was gone and apparently the new tires installed. I'll confirm with him the next time I see him. I do recall he said he went to the 85 profile vs 80 because I asked him to let me know how they fit.

I would stay away from Gladiator tires had them on my rig in less than two years tread started to separate. Go with Salium much better tire

The "Gladiator" reference was to the Dexter axles per Keystone website:

"6000 lb Dexter Gladiator® thick wall axles w/ upgraded springs & Nev-R-Adjust® brakes"

The guy in the park is wrong according to the Goodyear website , only E rated Endurance tires .

I think so too. Maybe he's thinking going to the 85 series vs 80 made it a higher load range? I've not seen him since he put the new tires on except his truck at the trailer after dark. I'll try to catch him one day but I'm sure they will be E's.

My guess is that you have 6k axles and 8 lug wheels rated at 110lbs. That's what came on our HC. Ours came with the Rainier "F" tires. Some folks have done well with their original OEM tires, but there are also a lot of stories of expensive damage caused when they blow. I'm a better-safe-than-sorry kind of guy and opted to upgrade to Sailun "G" tires. I went for a tire with a much better reputation as cheap insurance. There are no guarantees with any tire but there are definitely some brands with a much better reputation than others. My Rainiers didn't have a great rep. What brand came on your rig? For me the $750 for the Sailuns was a small price for the added peace of mind.

6 axles? I've never seen a trailer with 6 axles! 6 wheels, yes, but not 6 axles. I think you mean three axles, six wheels!

We had a 43’ DRV Mobile Suites Manhattan that had 6 independently suspended wheels, not 3 axels. The center “pair” were always a problem even though we weighed individual pairs and the factory said everything sounded good.

Maybe he put on "Good Ride" tires. Don't know much about them except at last years Tampa Show someone commented to their friend "Oh look they have Good Years on that RV", friend responded "Those are Good Ride, NOT Good Year". Just another China Bomb waiting to happen.

Tire load rating

The Goodyear Endurance in the 255/85/16 size seems to have one of the highest load ratings when inflated to it’s max pressure of 80 psi, compared to other brands max load at 80 psi. The speed rating of 129N = 87 mph which is far faster than we should be towing. .
Features & details
GOODYEAR Endurance - ST255/85R16 129N E
Load capacity: 4080 pounds

Hope this helps you to decide.

As with anything horror stories will exist.

My experience:
I've been through 6 rv's and have yet to change out any OEM tires nor have had a tire failure on an rv. Typically we would see about 4k miles per year; so not a pile but not zero.

But... I'm religious about having the tires inflated to spec. I personally believe the failures are often attributed to either damage or low pressure in regards to the lower end tires. Either of these will cause heat, then failure which is often epic due to the close proximity to the very light fenders.

My 330RL had Rainier tires and I had them replaced before delivery. I heard too many failure stories and I would not take a long trip with them. I bought Sailun G rated tires.

I changed my tires out to the Carlisle load range F tires. The stock load range E tires just didn’t cut it and I had multiple blowouts due to the Max 65 mph speed limitation. The load range F tires give a max speed of 80 mph. It was a good choice for me. FL3710 5th wheel
