Antifreeze ------ Again
Well, after a previous discussion about antifreeze I had decided to just go to Wallyworld and buy the cheapest. But I could not leave well enough alone. After reading
this article,
and this article,
and this one,
I decided to buy propylene glycol based antifreeze with no alcohol content. And since I could only find Prestone with no alcohol that is what I ended up with. A little over a dollar a gallon higher than the cheaper propylene glycol / ethanol mix. But that was only about $5 higher for 4 gallons.

Reading up on things can wear a guy out. Since the mid 90's up until I went "pink free" 2 or 3 years ago I bought the cheapest I could find. Didn't worry about fire, pestilence, nor disease and am still here to respond to threads Taste if any rapidly disappeared and my faucets and gate valves lasted without issue till my next trade. I saw the light ... well actually saw a blow out plug for near nothing and just blow em out now days.

Food grade propylene-glycol would be a better choice than Prestone automotive antifreeze, as the Prestone has many additives that are probably not too healthy. Corrosion inhibitors, etc.., they do have a Low-Tox version, .....but still. Edit: Ah, I see that Prestone has an RV water line product. Amazon wants $24, and Wal-Mart wants $4 ?!?!?!
Personally, I use the compressed air method for winterizing, and sanitize the water system with bleach water for re-commissioning after the freezing weather is over. It has never failed me, and we get a fair amount of sub-freezing where we are.
Even so, we do not use tank water for cooking or drinking anyway (and I suspect that a good portion of RVers do the same), but do occasionally use it to brush my teeth I have to admit.

I blow out my water lines and then use winter windshield washer fluid (less than $3 a gallon) in the drains. Never had a problem.

Ditto, get mine at Walmart. A/F is A/F, we're not buying engine oil.

Probably true. But if there really is the potential for taste or drying of seals issues what is an extra $5.

Years and years of using the cheapest, myself and numerous fellow rv friends and never a problem along with none of us drinking out of the tap. Sine we don't have a problem we will stick with what works. Interesting reading, I did learn something, and I am sure to some degree the science is there but the potential to me in this case seems remote.
In spring we will flush, sanitize and eagerly move on.

This kinda reminds me of McDonalds when they decided to trim down their choices on the menu ... it all was food, just too many different configurations. What ever happen to Hamburgler?

I just love all the studies and changing things we should and shouldn't do. Most to the time the research is sponsored by the folks who are selling you something or the folks trying to get you not to buy the other guys stuff.

I just love not having to winterize since we are full timers.
