Looking at 281CK Montana High Country

We are first time buyers of a 5th wheel. Have had TT’s, sprinter vans and pop-ups.
Heard that this was a solid 32ft(GVWR-14,300lbs)with King Bed. Watched the new reviews on you tube.
Retiring next year and my wife and I would like to get anyone’s thoughts on this model? I am aware it is brand new and perhaps someone recently bought one.

Would tow it with a Ram 2500 diesel 2020- 4x4(max payload-2190lbs and towing 17,170lbs). Any issues with this instead of a 1 ton? And 6.4’bed vs 8’ bed?

Thank you
Jim

I can't speak much about the new trailer. However, it is on the lighter side so a special drivers license may not be required in your state. In CA it would save some headache not being over 15k pounds gvwr. Might want to check that out.

The 2500 may be on the light side regarding gvwr. Weigh the specific truck and do the math using the door jamb sticker. The short bed shouldn't be a problem with the right hitch. Good luck and make well informed decisions.

If you'r'e not going to full time, you should be fine with that truck, all you need is the right hitch. We use a Pullrite automatic slider and don't worry about it.

Had not seen this trailer before so been looking about it. Looks pretty handy. Some numbers as far as the truck is concerned; they said it is 10,700 dry and 14,230 gvw. With a 2190 payload it is going to be "tight". At dry weight, which you will never see, and a 20% pin you would be looking at 2140lbs. on the pin in the truck vs that payload. So, just looking at that I would say you definitely would be over payload. If you want to carry enough stuff to actually enjoy camping in retirement personally I would figure on 1500+ lbs. of that 3500 pound payload used....maybe 2000 depending on what you like to do and/or carry. Then you would have 10,700 + 2000 "stuff" = 12700 (and I think you will be very close to that if like us) x .20 = 2540 lb. pin. To that you then have to add family, pets, hitch, jacks, tools (unless in trailer) and anything else you put in the truck. So the 3/4 will be problematic as far as weights go. "Pulling" will not be a problem but payload is always a problem for 3/4 diesel trucks. My thought would be the 1 ton.

My 6.4 bed has been fine. I do use an Andersen Ultimate hitch. I don't do 90 degree turns because I think it harms the trailer tires to pull them sideways vs rolling. I've had it almost there doing an unexpected U turn across an undivided 4 lane and no problem and could have turned sharper.

281ck

Appreciate all the help.
Bought it yesterday. 10 week wait for delivery. We can not wait.

Next step is to figure out the hitch and learn how to drive it.

Any advice?

Regards,
Jim
