Angel Soft Toilet Paper Problem

As many of you may know, I've been an advocate for Angel Soft Toilet Paper for several years. It's the only TP that we would use because of it's ability to break up in water. I've just run into a problem with Angel Soft not breaking up. It causes a problem when we macerate. So my wife took a sheet of Angel Soft and put it in a jar of water for 20 minutes and it didn't break up like it used to. So she then added some of what we use in the black water tank, Snow Fresh, and the TP then broke up within a minute and a half.

I only post this in the event someone may be having any problems. I don't know of any better TP than Angel Soft and I am open to suggestions. I've still got 12 rolls of Angel Soft to use up. I've increased the amount of Snow Fresh in the black water tank and I'll check it next week when I macerate again.

Thanks for any constructive help you may have.

Orv

We have used Scott's single ply for years and to-date have not experienced any problems. This is evidenced by our dumping with the use of a clear elbow to monitor what is dumped. The Scott's single ply has always visibly disintegrated and is barely noticable during the dump process.

We've used Sam's Member's Mark for several years. It breaks up well.

Another Angel Soft user here. I picked up a pkg the other day and noticed the packaging had changed some and I did not see the words "septic system safe" like they used to have. I thought maybe I was just missing it but now am thinking maybe they have changed something.

thanks for the heads up Orv, We'll keep an eye on it.

We use Kirkland and have had no problems with it breaking down. On one site I seen someones test some where and it was one of the top ones for break down.

This is good to know. I have always used Angel Soft, but will be changing now because our black tank does not seem to drain out well. Maybe this is the problem. Thanks.

Why Not Use Household Toilet Paper in Your Toilet:
Household tissues often contain adhesives
which bond together the paper fibers from which the tissue is made. The adhesives
prevent the tissue from breaking apart, and their use in “ultra-low flow” systems can cause
system clogging. SeaLand tissue is especially designed for use in low water toilet systems.
Its rapid dissolving properties minimize the amount of residual paper in the holding tank and
allow deodorizers to work more efficiently.
SeaLand Brand versus Other Brands. We constantly strive to provide our system owners
with effective products that have minimal environmental impact and good value. Many
deodorant products do not measure up to our standards of performance and value.

We have also used Costco's Kirkland brand (2 ply - safe in septic systems) for years with excellent results. I also use a clear plastic elbow at the drain exit to monitor the cleaning process but I think the key to avoid paper build-up problems is to flush the tank thoroughly and frequently. And while you're at it, don't skimp on the chemical that assists in breaking down the tissue. I don't think it's the brand of paper you use as much as it is the regular maintenance.

So far no problem with AS, but we also have an elbow so I do monitor how things are coming out, so to speak. We continue to keep an eye on it.

We just checked our stock of Angel Soft and every package does have the "septic safe" printed on it. Can anyone out there confirm they are now buying product without that label on it???

Here's what I received from Georgia-Pacific about Angel Soft:

Thank you for contacting the Georgia-Pacific Consumer Response Center. Georgia-Pacific places tremendous importance on the opinions we receive from our customers.

And with this most recent improvement, Angel Soft continues to deliver the softness, strength and absorbency you have come to expect at a very good value.
We're sorry you are disappointed with the changes we've made to Angel Soft®. Georgia-Pacific is committed to providing the best quality products and we appreciate you contacting the Georgia-Pacific Consumer Response Center.

We will be changing to something else. Scott's sounds good except for the single-ply which means using more.

Normal household toilet paper can be used safely in RV septics as long as it breaks down like Angel Soft used to. We originally could take a square sheet of 2-ply Angel Soft, put it in a glass of water and swish it around just a little and it would break down, but as we've noted it just doesn't work that way any more.

I also use a clear elbow on my septic line output so I can observe what's happening. I began to notice the last two weeks that toilet paper was coming through almost intact when I macerated and the macerator motor had to work a lot harder. Previous to this there was nary a glimpse of any toilet paper and the macerator motor had no problems--didn't even slow down.

"Septic safe" does not mean it is RV tank safe. It is septic safe because a septic tank like a large 1,200 gal septic tank has 2 compartments to it. The solids flow to the first side first. They stay there till they disintegrate then flow to the next side of the tank and overflow to the leach lines. Even septic tank should have chemicals added from time to time. The septic tank dealers evan say the septic tank should be pumped every 4 to 5 years.

We've used Angle Soft for years without problems. Until recently. Recently we've had a hollow gurgling sound in the toilet immediately after flushing the bowl. And a splashback when flushing, even right after dumping and flushing the tank. I don't know what the gurgling is all about but that splashback even when empty usually means a pyramid has built up and that's usually due to paper not breaking up. We put in some tissue digester and some hot water right after dumping today, so we'll see if that takes care of it. It did last time this happened.

Orv, I always did the tissue test a bit differently than you do. I always put a sheet of TP in water in a jar and shook it. If it broke up nicely and quickly, then I would use that brand. Otherwise, not. I never tried letting it sit without shaking but am now thinking that might be a better test since the black tank doesn't get shook up when we're not tooling down the road.

Although the paper passed my test we may have to switch brands if we keep having these problems. We're using the "Double Roll" Angel Soft, not the Mega Roll. Other than the touch test I don't know what difference there is between them.

I always thought "septic safe" meant the paper would disintegrate so it would flow out whatever. But I'm sure not an expert about that so maybe I'm wrong.
