Ford 6.7 MPG

New to forum. I did a search on forum but couldn't get an answer to this exact question. I have a 2012 F350 SRW 6.7 diesel (15,000 miles on odometer). Right now I am getting between 13 and 17 mpg using it in my construction business, loaded with tools, ladder racks, and sometimes pulling 3,000 2-axle trailer. I ran into another F350 owner the other day (he was plowing a truck stop). He said he has owned two F350's in a row with same engine. He claimed that with each one he got around 15mpg until he hit 20,000 miles and then he started getting 22-24mpg on the highway unloaded! He said it was like someone "threw a switch" at 20,000 miles. Has anyone else experienced this huge increase at about 20,000 miles with the new 6.7? Also, if the 6.7 does average over 20 or 22mpg after 20,000 miles, what can I expect pulling my 3400RL loaded?

You didn't mention what you have at the differential, for example, mine is 3.73. The lower the number the better the mileage, but will lessen the tow/cargo capacity. It seems like yours might be 4.10 or better. Do you know how this works?

In my truck I was easily getting 18-19 mpgs when I first bought it, and towing was about 10-13 mpgs with my 13,500 lb Monty. Then after 60,000 miles I starting getting 19-22 mpgs, and as much as 14-15 mpgs when towing. On the street driving I get between 14 and 16 and this doesn't seem to have changed much.

Even though I have the older 6.0, I'm chiming in because I had heard that a diesel engine improved over some thousands of miles of driving because the motor starts to break in and I can say I did see an improvement. Apparently this is supposedly true with all diesels. Of course, each person's improvement may vary and could very much depend on how you drive, how well the vehicle is maintained, how hard you work it and what roads you use (highways help me a lot).

It will be fun reading others' experiences, but overall I think there could be a slight improvement in your future.

We did not notice any change at 20K. When towing according to the guage we get between 9.7 and 11.7 with alot of 10.+ depending on wind direction and hills. When not towing we get 17.4 to 21.9 also depending on wind and driving conditions. I recommend only check the gauges after say 50 miles of travel. For example between Fort Pierce and West Palm Beach when driving south on I95 at 65 to 70 mph we will see roughly 17.+ then back off to 55 to 60 and go north with the wind at our back we get 21.+ mpg while not towing. I have left one of the trip meters not triped since new and all combined while towing and bobtailing we get between 14.5 to 15 mpg for 33,000 miles. However, others have stated including Carl and Susan (Carl Youngren) that the trip guage can be called a "lie-o-meter" as it will indicate higher miles than manual checking. My goal with watching the guages is to check for changes that might indicate an issue. Our F350 6.7 gets better milage than our previous 6.4 F250.

At 16K with no noticable difference on my 2012 F250 except when I added my Retrax Pro Cover on the back which did indeed add about a 1.5 MPG improvement. I consistently run non towing around 19.2 MPG around town and highway and 12.4 towing. Would be very happy with a 20K mileage MPG imrovement for sure.

I too have a 2011 F350 Crew Cab Longbed SRW and I sure didn't see a noticeable increase in MPG once I went past 20K miles. We just returned from two months of traveling covering 5,000 miles (2800 miles towing). We broke 20K about halfway through the trip. Mileage hasn't changed. 9.5 to 11.8 towing depending on speed, hills and wind. Non-towing is harder to pin point as usually a portion of each tank was used to tow. And the other non-towing use was basically in-town at 15-17 MPG.

I record every fill up. The Ford display consistently shows .5 to .9 fewer gallons of fuel than what the pump supplies. You can quibble about the pump values due to foaming, fill rate, temperature, etc, but over time the gallons used are *ALWAYS* less than what the pump delivers. But this is my towing experience. I recently made a 1500 miles trip without the trailer and predominantly on the Interstate Highway. To my amazement, the Ford measured gallons matched the pump! But for our latest trip, things returned to "normal" with a extra 1/2 gallon from the pump each tankful.

Don't get me wrong, I love this truck! It tows wonderfully with power, torque, and mileage that far exceeds my previous 6.4, 6.0, and even 7.3 rides. None of the previous trucks towed my 3700RL (similar in weight to your 3400RL). They hauled my 2955RL at 3,500 lbs, less weight. Yet this truck gets better mileage with less strain than any of the others.

We have never noticed any significant change in MPG with increased milage. Our 6.7 right off the lot got 20-22 MPG on the highway, 14-17 around town, and 12-14 when towing, (level terrain), and there has been no change.

While I'm new to diesels, I have read a lot about the flip-of-the-switch you are talking about with diesel engines. Not so much with mileage necessarily, but guys talk about when all of a sudden the truck just seems to run better like it has finally "broken-in". Not that it was running bad previously, just that it seems to settle in and run really well.

On the mileage, I'm in the ballpark with the others - about 10ish towing, and as much as 19 empty going by the computer.
