Ouch

Saw a new Montana in the rv park today, had extensive damage to the right fender skirts and slide from a tire blowout. Is this normal damage from a tire blowout?? Makes one want to think twice about taking a long distance trip.....

We drove 18,000 miles to Alaska and back without a blowout. You can still make it to the rally safely. Don't get any ideas about pulling out of the festivities!

You were reading my mind... After looking at the amount of damage, I sure did ask myself.. As you know, there will only be 1 reason that will stop me from coming to the rally. It was going to take a miracle to get me there, and my miracle has come in. I am already getting things in order for the trip, I WILL see you there....

I had a blowout on each side of the Monty within the same week and, yes, it did do damage to the fender skirts. Insurance covered under the collision policy.

About all you can do is keep current on your tire maintenance, pressure, alignment, wear, etc. Sometimes a tire will just fail no matter how much you try to prevent it. The damage can be repaired and that is what you have the insurance for. Not much different than accidentally backing into something or cutting a corner and hitting something. One of the pitfalls of Rv'ing. Just don't dwell on them and expect the unexpected. After all life is meant to be an adventure, its much more fun that way. What's that saying? Excrement happens?

Can't speak from experience about blowouts, but we had a tread separation that happened in the middle of the Nevada desert that broke the fender skirt and damaged the right rear of the Monty. I guess if tire failure results in loose rubber, you can expect this type of damage. Tire company stepped up to the plate and covered the expense of the repairs and replacement tire. First thing we did when we returned home from that trip was replace all four tires with heavy duty trailer tires.

Quit worrying - you take good care of your unit so you shouldn't have problems. We had 2 blowouts on our previous 5er and one did damage the fender. We touched it up and didn't think about insurance claim. Have fun at the Rally.

Not only is it pretty normal for that kind of damage due to a tread separation, the factors mentioned above are the main reasons that they happen. Age of tires, treadwear, underinflation, improper torque. And let me add the two that happened to me and most people will suffer from:

Overloading the axles
Speed too fast for load/heat.

I have since slowed down and enjoyed the ride.;

We had a blowout in 2002 that damage the slideout skirting and the fender skirt. When I was at Keystone in 2004 having fiberglass repaired, they also repaired the damage from the blowout---at no cost to me!

We had some bad Goodyear tires on our old 5W. One blew out on each side about an hr. apart. Saw the third going out before it blew. About a $1,000 per side--unfortunately it was two seperate incidents, so had to pay two deductibles! All four of our OEM tires on the Montana suffered tread seperation at about 16,000 miles, changed them before any damage, so watch them closely. (And I thought I was, but it took someone more savey than me to see it.)

I must admit my Tacoma tires have treated me very well. I had them balanced when I first bought the coach, and keep 80 psi in them all year. I also keep them covered anytime the coach is not sitting in the garage for winter. I have taken all the precautions I think I could have to help maintain the tires and feel confident about traveling with them. I guess the main thing in my original comment that I did not explain is, I have never seen a tire blow out before, the amount of damage it caused sure took me by surprise. Dont you folks worry, I have Coach-Net roadside service and it would take more than a tire change to keep me away. =)

Dave,
Just to show you what a tire can do. The fenders on the 5ers are plastic. So damage is not too surprising. On our 95 Chevy 2500 Ed had a blowout and it bent back the rear end of the fender in a 180. Amazing how much power is in there.

I guess I will just have to hit the road and let the powers that be take control... lol! You just watch, if there is going to be a problem, I bet I will have it in Wyoming. Between Sheridan and Gilette there are not to many towns other than Buffalo, and with my luck, if anything is going to happen it will be out there.. lol!! Are you sure you cannot make the rally???

Dave, some have had that kind of damage. We've had several blowouts and have had no damage at all (cross fingers). But it certainly can happen. Someone could cross the center line and run into us, too, but I won't let that possibility keep me from enjoying our Montana and traveling with it. Also, Dave, it could happen between your place and the next traffic light, too.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

There are two items that haven't been mentioned in this thread. The first, which was brought up at last year's regional rally, is infrared temperature sensor. When you stop for gas, get out with your IR thermometer and check for differential heat between tires. This will usually give an indication if you are having a problem. Second are the wireless pressure sensors that give a warning if you are under/over pressure. I know of a friend that has them, but haven't heard much about them.

Ron, I do exactly as you suggest with an IR thermometer. I also check the rims for any indication bearings are getting hot.
