Traveling with firearms

My wife and I are both in the military and getting ready for retirement and full time traveling in our RV. We’d like to bring out firearms with us for recreational shooting and self defense. We’re interested in what your experiences have been traveling with firearms. Multiple states have reciprocity, while other don’t.
1. How easy have you found it to find shooting ranges on the road?
2. How concerned are you about following local laws in relation to firearms?
3. Do you carry while traveling?

We’re haven’t seen very much on this topic online so we thought we’d throw it out there.

P.S. Sorry if this post offends anyone. We are very responsible firearms owners, with over 45 years experience between us.

We travel with our weapons and in 9 years of full timing have never had an issue. I do have a concealed carry license that is good in all but three states. I don't display or discuss my guns so there has never been an issue. There are many ranges in the west that are usually easy to access. Just don't try to take them to Canada.

If you plan on traversing CA do your homework. The rules are extremely onerous just for transporting and if you are FT your RV is sometimes considered a residence and sometimes it's just another verhicle.

I always take a 45 APC. If I go hunting especially prairie dog hunting with the boys we carry 6 to 8 rifles along with a few thousand bullets several pounds of powder and primers and our reloading equipment. We have never had a problem but like Dick we keep our mouths shut. No need to broadcast you have 6 rifles worth $4000 each and thousands miles worth in scopes.
If you are on BLM land you can shoot all you wish.

Congrats on your pending retirement.

Have never had an issue with firearms but I do not advertise them.

Plenty of ranges to use. Never an issue with law enforcement.

Generally do not carry but do at times.

Canada is easy to get a permit with long guns and a little research to make sure what you have is not prohibited.

Depends on where your permit was issued.
Check reciprocity laws. Use CCW app on iPhone/android.

Sorry don’t mean to hijack this thread Very interested to know more regarding three states. My research indicates FL, UT and AZ offer the most number of reciprocal states regarding CCW.

In general I don’t think this subject is one that carrying RVers choose to publicize.

Traveling with firearms of any type is a crap shoot. Many states are crazy with their laws. New York, for example, considers magazine with ammunition in it a loaded firearm. Even if you forgot the actual gun, just the magazine will get you jammed up. MD, NJ, NY, MA, CT, IL, CA and a few others are very difficult to carry.I do usually have something in the fiver for self defense but I rarely actually carry it on my person simply because it's next to impossible to know what is legal. And it's getting worse. Just look at what's happening in VA.

Here's one web site I check often for information:

Here is an easy to use web site for carry reciprocity. Link is for Texas, but just touch your home state on the map. This is for personal carry and does not address the particulars of carrying a firearm in your vehicle.

I would add New Jersey and Virginia to the list at this point.

New Jersey for sure.

Thank you and your wife for your service, I did twenty-eight years I inlisted doing the Vietnam war, but anyway I agree with everything that have been said. We travel with my weapon but have never had any problem, thank God. I would before each states you travel to look at the laws, another website that you can go to is https://www.handgunlaw.us/

I have my concealed carry from three states which give me a pretty good wide ranges of states to go to and the one I don't have I either don't go there or I will abide by there laws, good luck. I would most likely carry were you go because as you know it's crazy out there.

It looks like all has been said on the subject. One thing to do is google gun laws for the state you are going to travel in and you will get a pretty good account of their gun laws. One thing I suggest is, don't have a obumper stickers about your politics, clubs you belong to, like NRA, etc. I don't have any stickers on my vehicles. I have heard stories of prejudiced law enforcement people looking for a reason to stop anyone they may not agree with. Most law enforcement people are fair and business like. But there are exceptions. Don't have anything that indicates, a gun lives here.

One more comment. My wife and I were going into Canada on the Michigan border in our pick up truck with Texas license and I were a western hat. I was pulled over and searched in and out, under seats, tool box, etc. Of course I did not have any guns. I don't know, maybe they do that to everyone, but, I assumed more so since I was from Texas, everybody has guns in Texas. LOL

Carry, but never talk about it to anyone, and definately keep them hidden. So far, no problems. And yes, we both do have Carry and Conceal for our State. Never had to use it. We practice shooting at home. Don't need a range. That satisfies the need and want to practice.

I carry and don't care who knows it. I don't advertise it but I don't treat it like hiding a dreaded skin disease. Going through Canada this year so jumping through their hoops to bring a shotgun.
