Wiring issue

I recently hooked up to a friend’s trailer for him. Previously the running lights on the trailer weren’t working so he took it to a guy who worked on the trailer’s wiring. When I first hooked up to it, the running lights worked. I went about one mine to get the trailer inspected and then the running lights weren’t working. I took the trailer back to the guy. He did some testing and then said to unhook and pull up so he could hook his truck up to it. When I got back in my truck to pull it up, I smelled that electrical odor of something getting hot. He hooked the trailer up to his truck and the running lights weren’t working on his either.

I thought maybe it was just imagining things so I had a friend “take a sniff” and he noticed the smell too.

The smell isn’t getting worse but it is lingering. We checked under the dash and by fuse box under the hood and nothing feels warm.

What I’m wondering is, if the wire for running lights on the trailer was getting grounded out to the trailer frame, could that cause wiring in my truck to overheat??

thanks!

Found the problem. Followed my nose. Literally. The smell was coming from the fried brake controller.
