Ladder bike rack

We bought a Topline ladder bicycle rack for our 2850 RK. I put it on the ladder according to the directions with two bikes on it. The bike rack and bikes were fine, but the ladder seemed wobbly and bounced up and down some when we shook it to test it. We were concerned that the ladder, or worse, the back of the 5er, would be damaged while traveling. We decided not to use it that trip. Has anyone had any bad experiences using a ladder bike rack?
