2021 MOC Western Region Spring Rally Breaker Install

All the continuing discussions about problems with hydraulic systems tripping the 50 amp breakers installed in our rigs got me to thinking about offering to install 80 amp breakers for those who have not done this and wanting to, but are unable to do it themselves. I would not be charging any labor, just the cost of a breaker and any connectors or wire, if needed. I have been checking, and the prices of Bussman CB185-80 Surface-Mounted breakers are running around $30, plus or minus, depending on availability and quantity purchased. These are not auto-reset breakers, but since I installed the one in our rig seven or eight years ago, I have never had a need to reset it.

So, if there is any interest for me to do this, please respond to this post so I can order enough breakers in time before the rally. If someone already has a breaker or if one wants to purchase a breaker on their own, that is fine also. Just post that info so I can be prepared.

Bob,

Thanks! I have not changed mine. Reasonably capable myself but will not turn down help.

Sure why not? I have procrastinated long enough.

Excellent idea for any rally!!!
Maybe we can do this at the fall rally too.

Might even do the same at the Central Plains Regional Rally too. We can get the breakers at the local auto parts stores around here. Thanks for the suggestion Bob! Want to join us at the CPRR and volunteer at ours too?

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend that event. Hopefully you will find someone to do the installs.

I would recommend the 80A auto reset version. With the manual reset one if they have a problem they will not know where to start troubleshooting.

This is a link to the manual reset version-

Given the minimal price difference, the self-resetting one seems to be more user friendly. Plus Amazon doesn't have any and don't know when they might get them.

The scarcity now of the auto reset type is why I thought the manual reset would work, in addition to my experience with the one I installed in our rig.

I should have been clearer. Amazon doesn't have any manual reset breakers and don't know when they will. However the self-resetting ones are plentiful.

From the model number, does this trailer have a hydraulic system?

Guess I just discovered that it does have hydraulic slides.

My dealer installed a manual reset 80 amp after having issues with the 50 amp. The thing I like about the manual reset is it also acts as a full battery disconnect when we are not using the trailer for long periods of time.

The breaker that connects the hydraulic pump and the main panel 12 volt part does not feed the propane detector or other small loads, so opening the 80 amp breaker does not completely isolate all loads from the batteries.

Bob,

Will take whichever breaker you are able to get. Happy to get you money up front if desired. Thanks for taking this on.

Maybe Bob can train me... We will be at both rallys.

Bob, want an apprentice?

Sure! It’s really not hard, just can’t be afraid of playing with battery voltage.

Does this apply only to hydraulic jacks? Do electric jacks ever have problems with the 50A fuse?

I guess it's possible to have the 50 amp breaker fail, but the upgrade to the 80 amp breaker is really only for the hydraulic system, due to the high current draw by the electric motor that drives the hydraulic pump. The wiring on most of the systems for the hydraulics use #4 strand copper cable which will handle the high current. I'm not sure what is used on the electric systems, but pretty sure not heavy enough for a larger breaker.
