oil recommendations

About to have my first oil change on my 2015 F350 Platinum Diesel. Had a 99 F250 Diesel before this truck, always ran Royal Purple and it performed flawlessly for 16 years (bought the truck in summer of 98). I will most probably keep this truck for a very long time. Trying to decide if I want to keep the Royal Purple or go with Ford's synthetic. Dealer has quoted about $40 more per oil change for the Ford synthetic vs. Royal Purple. Started using the Royal Purple many years ago after a good friend who worked in the automotive research business told me that when his firm tested different oils that the RP engines looked brand new at over 200K miles when they took them apart. Any advice would be appreciated.

I use Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 but any good synthetic should work fine. I would get a oil test kit and have the oil tested each change to see how everything is wearing and to see how much fuel you have in the oil.

I use RotellaT6 5W40 as do most of my ford owner buddies. Have used rotella oil in all my ford diesels since 2000. Several excellent brands to choose from.

I use Mobil 1 for personal reasons, but it also has the advantage of being available anywhere. The Ford synthetic would be nearly the same availability since every Ford dealer should carry it. Specialty oils like Amsoil and Royal Purple can be hard to find if you travel to out of the way places.

I'm on my second diesel...nothing but Shell Rotella dino 15w40. The big rigs run it for 500k, that's good enough for me.

Rotella all the way. I have put many hundreds of thousands of miles on vehicles using Rotella and will continue using this oil.

Chevron Delo 400, 15/40. Have used it for almost 30 years. I have had no problems with any of my vehicles, gas or diesel. The dealer I have my truck serviced at uses the Chevron products there. That said, I would not hesitate to use any of the name brand big rig oils that are available, be it Delvac, Rotella, Royal Purple, etc. I would be hesitant to use some off brand oil though, you don't know what additives (if any) are in it.

Ford dealer does all our Maint and we use whatever Ford uses.we have never had a problem.

I'm like Rich, dealer and Ram included Oil Changes for a while. I think I get 10 all together. But I change every 6 months and I usually have only 2K-3K miles during those 6 months. I don't think I'll have any issues that are oil related.

While I'm using Rotilla until 50k miles or so, I'll switch to synthetic then. Just want to make certain everything moving inside gets worn in right.

I called Mobil Oil several years ago to ask when should I switch to synthetic oil. Their answer 'The day you get the truck'. Lots of cars now come with synthetic in them. Their reasoning was why wear the engine out more than you need to before you switch.

Correct. A lot, perhaps most, engine wear occurs when starting cold. Synthetic oil flows much better cold, especially below freezing than regular oil does. On top of that, synthetic oil will not create sludge like regular oil can. Waiting until 50K can be a mistake, as any sludge formed by the oil can be cut loose by the synthetic and plug an oil passage, or plug up the filter prematurely, causing it to go into bypass mode and quit filtering.

Newer engines, including diesels, are machined to much more exacting tolerances and do not require the break in engines of even 10 to 20 years ago.

Mobil knows more about when to start using synthetic than I do. As for new engines. A lot of people don't this but Fords new 6.7 couldn't even be made 20 years ago. The block material couldn't be machined on a production basis. It's too hard for the cutting tools that existed the. I've been in the machine shop business for 50 years. The new machines and tools are just unbelievable. Million dollar machines that check their own work, change their own tools and work lights out. You start them cut the lights out and go home. If there is a problem they call you tell you what the problem is so you can go fix it.
