Roof membrane replacement-need info

Our baby is a 2006 2955 5th wheel. Over the past 13 seasons it has gotten into a few arguments with campground tree branches. All the injuries were successfully bandaid’ed -so no water intrusion ever. But it is time to replace it. s So since I have a pretty technical construction related addiction and probably every tool known....of course I will do the replacement. I want to install at least OEM or better membrane material. So does anyone know the correct mil thickness of the EDPM material? There are so many knock-offs on the net and our Monty only gets the best. Thanks for your help. Jim in Tennessee

I'd be talking to Dicor.

Roof membrane

A pure guess - but I am guessing it is 40 mil. In commercial construction 40 mil EPDM or TPO is considered a budget roof...60 mil is the more expensive and durable roof.

Jimongee I applaud you. Nothing on the campers is complicated. If you try there is nothing to be done to them you can’t do.

It is a DIY but not done in a day. Really need it out of the weather so you don't have to rush. Of course every thing on roof has to be removed including AC. Find a tree or something high enough to back under. Lift AC and pull out from under. Your unit is old enough solvent based adhesive may have been used. If so the membrane will be stuck where splinters of wood will come up.
And last but not least replace the staples with screws while your at it.

PS: We have a female friend in Tennessee that replaced a roof with very little help and did an outstanding job.

not repair related but preventive

This isn't repair related but our 2017 305RL 5th wheel also had one argument with a campground tree and lost I'm sorry to say. My husband, who will not be beat, had the roof repaired. He is the better person to address this but my point is to say that since that episode he always travels with a tree trimmer. There are at least 3 RV park sites that now have nicely landscaped trees. It does take awhile for him to do his trimming but it is well worth it as we don't have to worry about our roof , slide outs or paint on the sides of the RV. I have joked with the RV park managers and handymen that maybe they should pay my husband for his services. Fortunately, they have all been thankful for the upgrades to their sites. Bottom line is that ALWAYS travels with the tree trimmer. He will not be beat and he will never allow any tree, bush or shrub to get harm his baby. I'm glad he feels the same about me.
I'll try to get him to post about the roof repair. Thanks for listening.

You may want to consider something such as this https://www.epdmcoatings.com/liquid_...plications.php

I put this on our 2004 and now it looks like new. It was a lot of work but easier than replacing the roof

Hi
It's 40 mil, I have just completed scaffolding 10 feet up on mine all the way around. I have been researching & gathering materials since last October. I am waiting now for a break in the weather...

Thanks to all. Nice to hear that are other folks out there who are not intimidated by tackling their own repairs -big or small. Since my original post we have purchased all the materials and collected all the tools. Today we are departing Tennessee with a destination of Charlevoix, Michigan. My brother-in-law lives there and he is ‘lending me his huge barn (where he stores his motor home). So I’ll have a nice protected area with all the utility I need to replace m roof. I bet my Monty is smiling already. Of course I’ll let you know how this adventure goes. Thanks. Jim n’ Kathy

Hi folks
Weather here is not cooperating, I don't want to tear off until forecasts give me at least 10 days of dry ! We are doing renos inside our rig in the meantime. Thank you for asking!

Thanks a lot for sharing these pictures. It looks amazing and gives me courage to try to tackle this myself. The dealer want $7,200 to do it for us. That’s a lot of loaves of bread.
Thanks again and happy travels.

Hi Flying Dutchmen
Yes I have finished the roof, but I haven't finished the trailer. I am personalizing it, I tore the bathroom out & it is almost done, I replumbed the whole trailer, creating a pex manifold for both hot & cold water with individual shut offs at the manifolds & I located those right beside the entry door to the bunker. I have a bunch of ideas that I hope to apply on most of the trailer systems, but haven't gotten back to the project as I am completing a restoration on a 67 Camaro for my brother in law, I hope that will be done by end of July ! Thank you for your interest Flying Dutchmen, stay well, stay safe out there !

Hi Everyone
The first picture shows the screws that I have chosen through my research. The “phosphate coated”[black] are a dual thread deck screw by “Dura-Grip”, they 1 ¼”. Dual thread being both fine thread for holding into the metal roof trusses, then the coarse thread for holding in the 2 layers of wood [3/8” & ¼” ply], they utilize a needle point for self drilling into the truss. The “Cad Plated” screw is designed for “snap lock” metal roofing, it has a 1/2” diameter, very flat head with coarse wood threads, I have chosen to use this screw for securing the rolled stainless steel edge transition from the roof to the sidewalls…I will eliminate the staples. The stainless steel does prevent the staples from pulling through, but it has such spring tension to it, that it pulls the staples out ! I will then cover the new fasteners with the “felt tape”.
In the 1st picture shows the Dicor Adhesive impregnated felt tape [CS200B-1], it is 100% water proof, sticks to anything, wood or metal & is reasonably priced in comparison to other products out there. I spoke with “Gorilla Brands”, & they weren’t confident that their product would react with the 901B/A adhesive. They suggested “trial & error” ! I attempted to contact “Eternabond”, but received no replies.
The 3rd pic shows the plywood I am using, it is 100% hardwood, but of more importance for me is that it is guaranteed to have “ 0 Voids”. The lack of voids was all the reason I needed. My existing roof substrate is 3/8” Lauan in decent condition, but it has these voids that do cause flexing, especially along the edges where the roof transitions to the walls. Our plywood supplier tells me that they sell a lot of it to the RV Centers, in particular the Keystone dealer here. The 2nd pic shows my adhesive of choice, I will use a “v-notched” trowel to evenly spread it out on the first layer of plywood.
The 4th picture shows water staining from a “staple” pinhole. I believe it was a fairly recent infiltration as the wood is still solid, there was no interior staining, & believe it or not, the duct tape held in that area…when we brought the trailer home in the fall after the purchase, I put a glob of self levelling over the hole, & we tarped the unit.

Scaffolding complete, 10.5 feet up, platform to park the 2 air-cons at far right, waiting for a 10 day weather window.
