Target stores for ice makers

We've found Magic Chef "Portable??" Ice makers at 3 target stores, 2 in Vegas and 1 here in Minden.....they are being clearance out for $84.98. So check your stores if you are looking for this item. They were originally 169.95

I looked at the reviews on the internet and they said that the ice cubes had a bad taste to them, regardless of what water you made them out of.

No problem with the taste of our ice cubes. The water cycles from the reservoir to the cooling elements and back to the reservoir. If you're not careful to clean the unit properly, mold could develop, which would most certainly affect the taste.

Thanks for the post about the sale at Target. We bought our icemaker about 1 1/2 years ago. I had to fight hubby on the purchase. Now he thinks it is one of the best investments, besides his truck, that we have bought for the RV. We use it in the house as well as the RV. Just might look into a second one since they are cheaper, just so we don't have to lug one back and forth to the rig.

They do grow mold in them if they aren't cleaned. We use bottle water at home and camping as a mineral deposit can build up in the machine. Even commercial restaurant ice makers develop mold and have to be cleaned, this is normal.

Mike,

We have been using ours for 2+ years and have not experienced any bad taste in the ice cubes...guess it would depend on how well you keep them clean and the type of water you put in the tank. I might be wrong here, but just guessing, stinky water equals stinky ice cubes?

Who do you use for your reviews?

I will have to recheck this. I think I read the reviews on the Target site. I checked three or four sites, so I don't really remember. There were 30 or 40 reviews on the site.

None here in South Central Florida. Just about everything in the local target stores are on "clearance". Wonder if they are about to go belly up???

Just had a glass of tea made with made with ice from one and it was good. We have never had any bad tasting ice cubes. I would recommend one if you could find one. Got ours a Home Depot 3 years ago.

I was hesitant to buy one also because of reviews. Bought one and tried it and went back and bought 2 more for gifts. They are the best thing going. Never have had a bad taste with any of the ice we made. When we take off for a short trip I freeze water in 1/2 gallon and 1 gallon milk or water plastic jugs. I fill them from the R/O filter at the house and then freeze the jugs. We use them as ice blocks until they melt then it's off to the ice maker for the melted water. It has always provided enough ice to keep the Margarita Maker running and other beverages cold. I always make sure it is real dry inside before storing it.

Not sure if it is the right thing to do or not, but I spray the inside with clorox water and run it a few cycles, then rinse the inside several times with water and let it drain into the sink. Then, I let it dry completely, add water from the Brita pitcher....perfect ice cubes every time.

Robbie, as long as the clorox solution is not too strong, there shouldn't be a problem. That's the same way you're supposed to sanitize the fresh water system.

Went to 3 target stores in Vegas on the way home from Q. All were out of ice makers. Continued toward home and stopped at 1 of the 4 Targets stores in Reno. No luck. Went to Home Depot and they had the Magic Chef for $99.00 on clearance. Regular price was $189.00. Picked it up. Thanks to Ice-Aholic Robbie for sharing the wisdom of having an on-board ice maker and also to to Mtheo for the redirect from Target to Home Depot. Washed everything before using and the first two batches had a slight plastic taste. After many, many tubs of ice everything tastes great.
