extended warranty or not?

We're taking deliver Saturday (12-20-14) on a new 2015 Chevy 3500 duramax. Am being high pressured to get the extended warranty at the tune of 4K. Personally, I think this is not needed and is grossly overpriced. Would like to hear from MOC. What say you?

Even if the prospect appears interesting that price is wrong. Call around to other suppliers such as Good Sam and see what they offer. I can't believe the price has gone up that much in the last 4 years.

I've bought the a few times in the past (MANY years in the past) and found the hard way that none of them are worth it. Not even for an RV with all the things that can go wrong. Even everything in an RV has some sort of warranty that's usually for several years and will almost always be all one needs (although figuring out which one applies and how to use it can be confusing). For a vehicle, it's a lot easier. To top it off, usually the ones you pay for have tiny print clauses that allow them not to cover a lot of things that really could go wrong (my first class C had an electrical problem that neither the truck maker nor the RV extended warranty covered and cost me $2k). You're better off putting something like $20 or more a month into a repair savings account if you're really worried about those things.

When I bought mine in Sept my dealer only wanted $1700. I still said no. Further, you can -I am told - buy it at any time prior to 36K.

We purchased an extended warrantee on a used 2006 Ford F350 dually. We paid roughly $2,000 for what warrantee. Well, I had many issues with the truck. The warrantee company has about $10,000 in repairs on my truck. So, in the long run, we are way ahead.

Not yet GM like F ord has a extended warranty that is a extension of the original warranty. We have the Ford through Ford and it is the same as the original warranty. In out case one high dollar failure would put us out of the RV business. Ask what the high dollar failures will cost you. Me I can come up with 2K or so for the ESP but nor 10,15,20K for failure. Do what is the best for you .

It seems like just yesterday.......I never believed in them before. However, we ended up getting one on the new Montana, and after hitting 35,000 miles on the truck we shopped around and got one for it.

My line of thinking was we are full time and for at least the next few years would be putting a lot of miles on traveling. Being full time everything in the fiver is being used constantly plus it is being pulled down the bumpy road all the time. Most of the annual miles on the truck are towing miles with a lot of weight so we are maxing it out in my opinion.

I personally think if you were leaning toward an extended warranty on the TV you would be much better off waiting until closer to the 36,000 mark.

Do not give in to the high pressure sales pitch! You will have plenty of chances to purchase later (close to factory warranty end) at a MUCH better price. The last time I bought a new truck I told the dealer NO 2 times and that if I had to do it a 3rd time it would be as I walked out the door. No more problems.

I have found that the warranty can be negotiated, just like everything else. The 100K drive train will catch most of the big items early on. However, was glad I had the 100K factory warranty on the exhaust system when 2 of the 3 DEF sensors went out. Everything now costs so much to replace. Suspect you could get the warranty for $2K, which might well be worth it.

When you go to pick it up, they will take you to the finance man's office and he will offer that warranty to you for $4K. The answer should be NO.

Then he will offer it to you for $2K. The answer should still be NO.

Would never buy one on a Truck. We never bought one on anything until our current Montana. So far on the Montana we have paid two years worth ($362 X 2= $724) and have not made a claim. To date It has been a good deal for Good Sam, but not so for us. We just paid that second $362, and it was against my better judgement and lifelong experience. Apparently we are beginning to think we can purchase a more secure future. Will probably start buying lotto tickets.

You can buy a factory warranty from ANY dealership, even online. You can buy the warranty anytime within the original 36 month warranty. Bottom line: DO NOT buy an extended warranty at the time of purchase! If you decide to get one later, then seek quotes from dealerships across the nation. Just make sure they are offering the same factory extended warranty, not a proprietary warranty offered by their dealership exclusively.
Several years ago, when I bought a new Toyota Prius, I was offered the Toyota extended warranty at the obscene price of $3400 dollars at the time of purchase. I laughed. I already knew better. I bought the same warranty about 2 years later from a Toyota dealership in the mid-west for $1240. I used that warranty twice and ended up $600 to the plus with it and sold the car with warranty remaining for the new purchaser. It was a GREAT selling point while I was selling it! (I bought a new Prius, and did the same thing again with the extended warranty)

Absolutely NOT. The only extended warranty we ever bought was on a 1980 Chevy pickup, with the infamous 5.7 liter converted gas/diesel engine, and everyone knows what a disaster those were. Did buy an extended warranty on our first Montana, and wished we hadn't. $2000 wasted....well, the dealer made money, and the insurance company made money! If you read all the forums on extended warranties, it will be a resounding NO. We just bought a new GMC, and they tried to sell us the warranty. In our case it was only a little over $2000. Still, NO WAY. And for $4000......boy your dealer is wanting a great Christmas party, apparently. Best thing to do, take that money you'd spend, put it in a savings account, and let it draw interest..for YOU. Then, hope you never have to use it.

I do not understand way we feel we should get our money back on a Extended warranty which is basically a Insurance policy. We have had the Ford ESP since the 36K warranty ran out we renewed it 2 years ago. We have not got our money back as we have not had major failure. We did have a 850.00 claim that was promptly paid less the 100.00 deductible.

We did purchase extended warranties on the 06 3400 and this 13 3402.we had been Rv'ing long enough to understand that the probabilities that
we would need one were high. Five failed holding tanks on the 06 3400 alone got our money back not to mention fires, failed appliances, axles shift, ect.
Two holding tanks were replaced last season on this 13 3402 along with wall panels that had popped out, sconce that had fell off the wall and a front door that did not fit properly. That was a 1200.00 bill paid less deductible. We have not yet got our money back but the probabilities are high that we will.

We are not full timers but we are high end users.Lots of travel lots on living it time as JandC described.

Review how you will use the unit. Miles traveled, living in it time and your financial were-with- all.

We see Extended warranties on the Truck and Montana as a protection against high dollar failures that would be financially disastrous as with any Insurance policy. We can afford 2K a year for the warranty we can not afford a 10/20 K failure bill. Again do what is best for you.

Like everything about the car buying process you need to beat on the sales guy if you really want one. My factory backed warranty on my Grand Cherokee (lifetime unlimited miles) and the factory backed warranty on the ford (8y 125k) were available online from other dealers. I found the best price available, made the selling dealer meet or beat the price and in the case of the Ford knock a point off my APR.

I never bought them until we purchased our last two vehicles and I wouldn't have if not factory backed and had they not cover a ton of possible issues. In the case of my Grand Cherokee it's already paid for itself plus $1k when a major computer part failed. Oops I lied I bought one 10 years ago when I bought a used Mercedes. I knew I didn't want to spend 10k on an engine if it turned out to be a Lemon, simple insurance policy really. It almost paid for itself when the workings for the convertible died.
