Grand Canyon

My wife and I would like to see the Grand Canyon if she can travel, her back isn't in good shape, arthritis. When is the best time to see it? What CG in the park could we stay at?
Thanks Lynwood

Trailer Village is the only cg with full hook-ups in the park. It is very convenient as the free shuttle picks-up at the c.g. and can get you everywhere on the south rim without using your car. Easy on-off with courteous drivers and reserved front area seating for seniors and mobility compromised. Can access restaurants, stores and scenic overlooks with minimal walking. We were there in May and enjoyed every minute of our 3 days. Plenty of room in the cg for our 35 ft.5er and a lot of larger rvs. Take your time and look at everything and have fun.

Is Trailer Village a CG you can make reservations? How far in advance if you can?

We too stayed there for almost a week and had a great time. You can make reservations. How far in advance I'm not sure. I would make them as soon as I could. You can always cancel. By being in the park you can go back and forth as much as you want and see the canyon at different times of the day. The sun changes what it looks like.

Here's the link for information and making reservations:

Best time to go? Mid December, two days after a 6"-8" snowfall in the park, roads plowed, clear skies, bright sun, absolutely no wind, temp about 40 degrees, barely needed a coat, virtually no visitors in the park, apparently scared off by the much heavier snowfall in Flagstaff, at most of the overlooks my footprints were the ONLY footprints in the snow except for small animals, so quiet I could even hear the river far below at a couple of the overlooks.

One of those once in a lifetime events I stumbled into about 20 years ago.

But since that is hard to plan for, I would just plan on going outside the normal tourist season, and preferably during the week.

I wouldn't bother going. Just get a good coffee table book with nice pictures. Just like seeing it in person.

We went in July. Super hot. If you want to hike at all go when cooler. Kids are plentiful in summer too.

You'll love it. Just nothing like seeing it in person.

Friends and I went in April this year and was so glad we picked that time of the year. It was warm enough to be comfortable and cool enough to hike without overheating. We hit a number of the parks in Northern NM, AZ and southern Utah. The parks we busy, but we could tell that other times there are many more people. We had a great time and highly recommend the trip. The one downside was that a number of smaller campgrounds were still closed. We didn't stay in the park, we hadn't made any reservations for our trip of 3800 miles, (MN rhru CO, into NM, AZ,UT then return to MN). The only spot we almost had trouble was in Moab. We hit it on a weekend and everything was full. A brand new campground had opened on the south side of Moab 2 weeks earlier and since they were new, they had plenty of spaces available. If they have rain in the spring, the desert flowers will be in bloom. We say lots of cacti in bloom and there was more greenery than in the fall.

THANKS to all. I have seen the desert bloom. That is worth seeing. I do have a coffee table book with pictures of the Grand Canyon and what made me won't to see it. I have a nice DSLR and what I have found out is sometimes pictures just don't do justice to what you are taking pictures of. I kinda think this is one of those times, big time, but I won't know for sure till I see it.
The BIG question is, can my wife go? I don't think it would be much fun without her.

Don't know how bad your wife's back is with arthritis, but the visitor center on the south rim is hand-cap accessible. We stayed at the Grand Canyon Railway RV Park and took the train ride to and from the rim. There is no reason why you couldn't bring a wheel chair if that would make things easier, and you can get to most of the things to see. You will have a few hours there before the train leaves to go back to Williams, and we found that plenty of time to visit.

If you're not into hiking, you might want to stay in Williams, AZ and take the train. You can still drive up from Williams if you want to do additional days there.

This should be on everybodies bucket list....I've seen it in movies, in books and from the air....but nothing prepared me for seeing it in person. Walking up to the rim brought tears to my eyes. And no it is not a far walk from the parking lot at the one location....

Thanks to all again. I won't be able to make it this fall. My wife can walk just fine setting in a vehicle is the problem for her. But that isn't now the problem, one of the guys in my shop has prostate cancer. It was caught very very early and he will be ok. I will be pressed back into service for a while. The guys that work in the shop get paid whether they show up or not. When they work they can do what ever they won't to do. When people have freedom you get more done.

We are staying at railside rv ranch and had no problem getting in for the week we are here. Shuttle buses in canyon have wheelchair ramps. Temps from 60-80's in early september, depending on time of day. Think I have been to canyon in almost every month over years I lived in albuquerque and all were well worth it. John
