When travelling from Canada to USA if you have dry dog food it must be made in the US. Three years ago we have had an open sack made in USA but because it was open we lost it. Also processed lunch meat from Costco in Canada was taken.
Now that we are living back here in Langley, BC we have not had issues like that, that we had before.
If one is truthful about every question asked, life is so much easier. This also pertains to life in general too.

So if you carry a handgun and are crossing into Canada you can declare the handgun, leave it with the Canadian officials and pick it up when you return to the States? Have others had experience with this?

Now no offense to our Northern Neighbors, but I would be very concerned about it being there upon my return. I wouldn't leave a Hand Gun with anyone other than a Licensed Fed Arms Dealer who provides Safe storage for weapons for a fee and gives you a receipt for said weapon.

I faxed a request all the papers required to get into Canada with a hand gun for which I am licenced and was flat turned down. They will not hold your weapon till you return there are no storage lockers to keep your weapons, they will allow you to ship it home. so I guess they won't get any of my money

The Canadian Boarder Patrol will certainly hold your gun for you. Forever.

Do what was suggested: leave it with a Federally Licensed Firearms dealer and get a receipt. Don't expect them to do it for free either. They might, as a gesture of good will, but every firearm left with a dealer has to be logged into his books, and then logged back out when it leaves the shop, and this takes time. Even if they didn't charge, I'd tip them $10 or $15 for the trouble.

Keep in mind that the border agents are less interested in the answers to their questions than they are in your demeanor in answering them. If you act nervous your chances of increased scrutiny will multiply greatly. We've also experienced that the scrutiny is less intense crossing into Canada than returning to the United States. Our rig has never been inspected entering Canada, but it has on the return.

We just cross the Canadian Border a month ago.mi should point out we are Canadian. All they wanted to know about was guns, alcohol, mdrugs and cigarettes. When we crossed into the U.S. Last fall however, the U.S. Border agent was very severe. No meat, fruits, veggies, plants (soil). We find the U.S. More restrictive than Canada

WE have crossed back and forth so many times (from & to Manitoba)that it is just common place for us. All good advice from the above posts.

Going in to the U.S. no fruit, vegetables, meat, or Canadian made dog food and must declare large sums of money.

Coming back in to Canada is much easier for us cigs, alcohol, guns and drugs plus now eggs and poultry. This is usually followed up by a Welcome Home with a smile. We've even had some great conversations about our dogs. We rarely see a personable/human side of the agents when crossing in to the states, it's all serious business. JOHO.

Every fall on our way south we declare meats (beef, pork and chicken) going into the US. The only fruit we take are bananas. No problems.
This year we won't take chicken due to avian flu.
