Retired...Again
My School bus driving days are over . Went to the school yesterday and had a chat with my Transportation manager. Very nice lady. I was only doing athletic trips and charters since Helen retired and did not do much of that last year not to mention we are not home very much any more. I was ready to call it quits but needed some self justification. Turns out the school in in financial trouble(private school) and the board was looking for ways to cut cost in transportation. She was concerned that they were going to ask her to combine routes and lay off a driver. I am Number two in seniority so did not have to worry about that but the lady that would fall out the bottom needed the job so that was the justification I needed.
Over the last 10 years school bus driving bought both of our big Ford trucks and the 3400 and has paid for our travel and winters as well as building up a nice travel account . We are greatful. Helen's Disney work will pay for our winters..and who knows..I might even find something to do ??? I always wanted to pump gas , clean windows and check oil at a gas station..but no one does that any more.

Rich that was an honorable thing you did! Let me commend you on that. With the economy such as it is everyone needs every penny they can get and it sounds like that really kept someone in a much needed job. I’m sure something will come along to off set the extra travel expense. Things like that usually have a way of working itself out.

This lady I was referring to and her spouse had inherited several acres of land and built a new home on 1 acre of it not 3 years ago. The spouse lost a very good job with a large company. As soon as he did they went to the bank to work something out and the bank would not help them. They could find no buyers for the house and the few that showed interest could not get a bank loan. They had no choice but to stop paying the mortgage in order to survive. She is driving a school bus for another school district in the morning for the private school in the afternoon and weekends athletic trips and charters..and..has a job as a waitress. She looked like crap, tired and worn out. She said they have no choice but to walk away from the house. Fortunately the rest of the land is clear, no buyers for that either so they will put a trailer or whatever on the property. Just a dream shattered,,,who cares..right.
We also found two homes on our nice middle class neighborhood vacant and in foreclosure. Two families that had been here for a long time. Two stories that should have never happened . One family(4 kids) they both lost their jobs (auto industry) and the other a older retired couple had their investments"wiped out" Wonder what they did wrong??? We are so fortunate and count our blessings every day.

Rich that was a very noble thing you did so that lady could keep working. It was the right thing to do and sad but some people would not do this for another in need.
We are too, very lucky that we sold our house just in time before things got really bad. Every day I think God for our many blessings.
We get to travel during the summer and sit in a resort in AZ during the winter. Now how great is that!

We are in a recession but if you suddenly find your self with out work it quickly becomes a depression!

Hey Rich, Can you say: "Welcome to _________mart" or "May we supersize that?" When our airline was going chapter 11 in Alaska, those were common greetings between us pilots.....lol BTW, NICE JOB!!

Rich, more of us need to remember, "Do unto others, as we would have them do unto us". God doesn't forget. You will be rewarded. Good job my friend.

Phil I thought about that..welcome to..... but I would have to stand up for to long. We could have done everything we did without me ever driving a school bus or having another job, I did it to keep busy while waiting for Helen to retire and I loved doing it. The extra money was never used to pay a bill. It allowed us to not use any of our salary, pension or investment income to purchase all our rv,ing needs. I would never take a job or benefits away from someone who needed them. I will drive a tram for Disney next winter season not because we have to but because we want to and it will not hurt that between Helen and I it will more than pay for our winter travels and not have to dip into our travel funds.. This is a great adventure...live it.

Rich,
Things have a way of coming about and your rewards are in the future. I hope that the school told the lady of how she got to keep her job. Not for her to thank you, although she should, but to know that there is help in this world and when her day comes, she can help someone else in some way. It's not pay back, or pay forward, it's just the way it should be and we would be a better society for what you have done if everyone would do it.

Good on ya, Rich! And congratulations. Who knows, if you start pumping gas, checking oil and cleaning windows at your local gas station, you may just start a groundswell movement!
