Trap Door

Well, it's been awhile since I've been here, but there have been some things that have taken precedent over the last year or so.

I'm sure someone has already experienced this problem and has figured out a solution. The door over the laundry basket has started to bow, I assume from weight as we step on it going into the bed room. It is not in danger of breaking. I would like to give it some attention and put it back to where it lies flat on the floor. Only one corner has started to lift with about a 1/4" gap above the floor.

Any ideas how to fix this??

Charlie, I would take it off, take the carpet off and replace the board, probably 3/4" plywood, Lowe's will cut a pc. to size for you, then just tack the carpet back on and re-apply the hinge.

I've thought about that but it appears the carpet is glued to the under side of the board. I think that I will have to maybe try to separate it with a carpet knife and will probably cut the carpet where it will not be reusable. This is the reason for the post to see if anyone has actually make the repair and what I could expect.

You might buy an "L" shaped piece of aluminum and screw it to the underside of the trap door to pull the door back into shape- JHMO- Don

I believe there was someone a few years back who had the sagging floor problem. As I recall, they used aluminum angle iron (well not really iron but you know what I mean) screwed to the underside to provide re-enforcement. Perhaps a "Search" of the Archived Posts might locate it (or not given the way Search has been working).

Charlie, I would take it off, take the carpet off and replace the board, mine was 5/8" plywood, no glue just 300 staples

OK, sounds like you guys have been there. I think I have the 3/16" with the 5/8" that Bobby has. It matches the wall board. I'll pull it off and take the staples out and go from there.
Thanks.....

The laundry hatch hinge screws pulled loose on mine and the door went out of place. I took the screws off and drilled through the aluminum square tube and replaced the screws with longer bolts and nuts. This has worked great and hasn't moved yet. Hope this helps someone.

I went to Home Depot and got "L" aluminum angle, thick wall, not the thin, it won'g be strong enough. I notched the ends so that the "L" portion of the angle would be down in the hatch opening. I used two of them and spaced them equal distance apart from top to bottom.
No more squeaking or bending. YOu will need short screws that will go through the thick portion of the aluminum and still get a good bite into the wood without sticking up through the carpet. Wouldn't be good if you walk around in your rig in bare feet!!

What would it be like to do both, new board and support angle. Counter sink the bolts through the top before you reapply the carpet. Seems like that would make a fresh, strong door.

You know if you need more carpet to fix the patch , just lift the bed and you have lots of new carpet under the bed . I had to replace a spot so i took it from under the bed and you will never know as color was the same, no fading..sailer

I had to run back and look at our trap door to see if it was sagging. After 6 years it is not nor has our slide floor.
