Water Heater
Are we saving propane and/or maintenance by turning our water heater on only when we need hot water? We currently do not use the electric option because it is not working correctly. thanks for expected replies...Joanie

You are probably saving a little money, but I hazard that it isn't much unless you are in a very cold environment. We leave ours on when we are boondocking because we don't want to wait for hot water in the morning for our ablusions.
To see if your water heater is kicking in at night, turn off both propane tanks. When the HW tries to light and fails because of no flow, the red light on the panel will illuminate indicating a fault.

Joanie and Dave,
We do as Kat and Michael. When we are boondocking we are usually in a relatively mild climate. Good luck and keep enjoying the RVing life style. Dennis and Mary Kay

It's generally cheaper to maintain hot water than to heat cold water.

Agreed, easier to keep the water hot than it is to heat cold water. Years ago when we first started into the energy conservation deal, we were living in a Mobile Home (real trailer trash). The furnace was Propane, so we tried to conserve by turning the thermostat down at night, but soon realized we were using more because the furnace would run so long in the morning to bring the temp back up. Just our experience

We turn ours off just after dinner and back on 1st thing when we wake up coming downstairs for morning coffee. Seems to work out well.
