2008 6.7 Cummins EGR Cooler

The "Perform Service" light came on in our 08 Ram 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins in it. It has about 124K on it. Truck runs fine; no smoke from the tailpipe under acceleration or heavy load (pulling the 5er).

I see that replacing the CCV filter and cleaning the EGR valve are not too big of a deal but removing and cleaning the EGR cooler is quite the job. On the Cummins Diesel forum I've read the back and forth of whether or not this is something that you need to do (if it ain't broke, don't fix it vs do what Dodge recommends). Some Cummins mechanics say that Cummins doesn't require the EGR cooler to be cleaned at specified intervals -- only when it starts acting up and needs it.

A number of owners seem to only replace the CCV filter and clean the EGR valve and not worry about the cooler.

Anyway, if any of you have the 6.7 Cummins, I'd like your opinion of whether or not it's worth it to clean the EGR cooler.

If the Check Engine Light is on, there is something not working properly, and not understanding what it is supposed to do is not good. I'd take it down to Champs in Surprise to at least find out what is needed and what problems it will cause by not working. 623-376-6791

Sorry but can't speak about the Cummins but a clogged EGR cooler on the Fords is a good excuse to do a complete delete.

My Cummins mechanic recommended replacing the CCV filter and clean the EGR valve. His thought is if the cooler needs to be cleaned you will be getting check engine messages as opposed to "perform Service" I bring him the parts and he performs both services for $100. I can do it myself in about an hour but throw him the $100 bone for all the free advice he gives me.

Check engine light isn't on and no codes are displaying. Just the Perform Service light up on the overhead display. IAW manual, it means to service emissions: replace CCV filter, clean EGR valve, and clean EGR cooler.

I will surely replace the CCV filter and clean the EGR valve. Just wondering about the EGR cooler. I'm leaning pretty hard to just let that part be since it's running just fine.

I would clean the cooler just so you know, if all is good then you know not worry about it in the future. I seen some where to clean it at the same time when you change the CCV filter which I believe it at 60 or 65K, mite have been on Genos website. Anyways I will do mine when it come time.
