Wouldn't be without it (especially at older CG's). See signature for our choice, a little more than a Surge Guard, but justified in my opinion.

Have a surge guard and adding an autoformer. We have had several instances where the surge guard cut itself off and reset itself do to a power surge.

Definately get a surge guard. The damage it protects against can be very expensive.

We got the Surge Guard the first year we we had the rig. Our friends, which have the same year rig, don't use one. I am waiting to see our purchase pay off. Three years and still waiting, but we feel better having it then not having one.

Mine has paid off and I didn't have to wait three years. A friend of mine was in a park and there was a lighting in the area. He didn't have a surge guard. He has a MH. He got a surge and his TV stopped working and he had a problem with his generator. That was only the first of his problems. Thing that didn't go out on that day later had to be replaced. It appears that all the electronics were weakened. He now has a surge guard.

I have a 50A Progressive Industries Surge Guard installed. This past month we spent 6 nights at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone. For the first several days, every evening when we returned to the trailer I would see the Alarm Clock in the bedroom flashing. Even though it was not too hot or cold, I figured it was a rolling brownout that caused it. Around the 4th or 5th day it was raining and we spent the afternoon around the trailer to do some housekeeping items. When I walked by the controller for the Surge Guard I noticed the volts for the shore power where very low. I am now thinking that we did not have several days of brownouts but instead we had our surge protector disconnecting power because the volts dropped too low. Protection well worth the price.

We have same as RickW. Had it since day one and it has shut down the 3400 several times. We hook it to the power pole fist and let it check the pole before plugging in the 3400. It has found problems at the pole several times.. Cheap protection considering the value of what it is protecting.

does any one have a Portable 50 amp Surge Guard? Are they as good as a hard wired one? also, can you use a 50 amp surge guard when the CG only has 30 amp?

I have a hard wired surge guard but the portable ones offer equal protection. They can grow legs though, if someone is so inclined. You can use a 50 amp surge guard as long as your trailer is set up for 50 amps.

We have the portable Surge guard because we usually do not keep Campers all that long. We would hate to lose it and have had no problem in 3 years, In fact have had no problems with losing anything in over 25 years of camping but... it is included in our insurance coverage.

I also have the Progressive Industries PT-50C surge protector. It shut down once because the frequency went high.

I also use it to check voltages on the line, but I leave mine plugged into the power cable all the time. There is a 2 to 3 minute delay before it activates. There is a little blinking light in the lower right hand corner of the digital display. It will blink until the PT-50C activates itself. There is plenty of time to check line voltages and the error condition code. E-0 being normal.

I would not be without protection. It's just insurance against a possible electrical problem on the line.

I have the portable and with the appropriate adapters you can use it for either 50 amp or 30 amp.

You have to have a male30 to femail 50 to connect to the pole. After that you can choose to run your 50 amp cable or use a male 50 amp to 30 Amp Female adapter and then run your 30 Amp cord to the rig. The portable unit has a way to lock the surge guard to the cable but it doesn't keep them from stealing the surge guard and the cable both but so far we have been blessed.

We got a portable Surge Guard 50 AMP for the trip to Canada we just got back from, and bought the locking hasp as well. We actually had no issues this trip, but I was happy to have the protection. One problem is short power poles. A couple were so short you could not hang the SG unit, and the instructions firmly state you cannot leave these laying on the ground. For those camps you just have to hope for the best.
