You should be able to hear it click when engaged. Typically in that utility space next to the basement pass through. Where the steps are. The wall in the compartment unscrews and you will find that's the home run for everything. It can be a scary sight.

It helps us answer correctly if you tell us the year and model of your RV. It is best to add it to your signature which you can update by clicking on "User CP" in the second brown bar near the top of each page.

Is your rig "Generator Ready"? A transfer switch is only installed if the answer is YES.

Yes we have a generator. The power works off the generator but not when we plug the power cord it to run off shore power. We have a 2021 Montana 3760fl.

So to be clear, when plugged into shore power there is no power? When you start you gen and after about 30 seconds do you hear a click or clunk? If yes then that would be your transfer switch. Your shore power is connected to the transfer switch and then feed to the main breaker panel. If you have power from your gen and not shore it has to be from the transfer switch back to the power pedestal. I would start at the source and work my way to the TS. Start at the power ped using a volt meter. Check power at the cord end that plugs into the coach. If all is good then start digging for the TS.

There have been a ton of reported problems with that era transfer switch. The classic sign is it gets stuck in generator source mode even when shore power is applied. A Search on transfer switch will come up with the name, and how to reset it or bypass it.

If you determine it is the transfer switch, there is a recall on them.
Call Progressive Dynamics with your model and serial number.

If you have the PD52DCSD it has an EMS board that can detect certain shorepower errors and not make the connection. BTW the DCSD has a 3 led display inside the rig (ERROR, SHORE, GENERATOR).

As others have said - it can also just fail! Mine hadn't failed but it did disconnect once when my Watchdog EMS detected no errors. I trust the WD so I've proactively replaced my ATS with a simple one that just works.

You should be able to just follow the generator wires to the xfr switch.

Transfer switch location

Look above the generator enclosure for s silver metal box 10” X 12”. There should be 3 1” diameter black sheathed electrical cables entering the box. Another way to locate the transfer switch is to start at the left side of the generator. There should be a gray liquid tight flex hose that passes throwing the partition wall, that will lead directly to the transfer switch.

transfer switch location

just inside the passthru behind the inverter on the ceiling. you will have to remove the driver side panel to see it. That is where it is located in our 2021 3761fl.
