Axle grease

Looking for enlightenment from those of you who grease your own axles. What brand(s) and weight(s) do you prefer? Gracias!

I just use a good grade og grease. Use it in a gun & pumpk it in real slow 2 pumps per wheel or you will push the seal out in back.

Be sure to check the heat rating on the grease. I don't have the manual in front of me, but I seem to recall it needed to be rated for 400 degrees. I'll look it up and post later. I remember having to shop around a little to find it. I just add a couple of shots a each season. Over doing it blows out the seals as has already been mentioned.

Hello Pete,

I'm sold on Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease. You can find the specs. at http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...tic_Grease.asp

If you go to this you should remove all old grease, it's never a good idea to mix grease. Please don't ask me why, this is what our Aerospace Lubrication Engineers recommended.

There's a lot of solvents that will work to wash away the old Grease, but I use Simple Green. It takes a little longer than say Kerosene but it's a friendly Solvent, to you and the Environment.

Happy Camping

I'll second that. I've been using the Mobile 1 S.G. since I got my old TT. Good stuff!

kdeiss,
There you go... that was the information I was thinking of. I remember shopping for the correct grease, I just couldn't remember all the details.

I understand using the correct grease with the correct minimum drop is important whether removing and regreasing the bearings or just shooting more grease in through the zerk. I would think not mixing greases would apply to the zerk method as well. But I have no idea what grease the factory uses.

Thanks a million, all! Maybe I'll drop the factory a line and see if any of the techies knows what they are using.

See ya down the road!

There is lithium base and urea base, plus syn, the urea base said not to mix on the label. That was one of the reasons I pulled mine down and repacked them, but I didn't have to everything was ok. The bearings were from Romania and the seals Taiwan, that bothered me some but all looked good, and the new National seals came from Mexico, but so did the Dodge.
