Just today there was someone pulling a 25+' bumper pull with a nissan something, the rear tires had air under them when going over our great Louisiana roads!
Why would you buy a camper to enjoy life and not have the correct tow vehicle?????
If you can't afford the correct tow vehicle get a pop up!

Hi

The federal rules and regulations exempted “Personal use vehicles” and some other exempted vehicles like the NASCAR transporters.

You can go thru the scales there is not a penalty for doing so. If they are the “weigh on the fly scales” where you go thru at 45 MPH they will give you the green light but if they are the older ones they will give you your all up weight.

They will take the time to explain to you that unless you are in the delivery business and have a DOT number on the TV you are not required to go thru the scales. The delivery guys are required to do so by some states.

Good to hear. We have no more weight to add. Believe it or not I really forget the rig is back there. The 1999 cummins 5.9 pulling a laredo was no fun but I pulled it for ten years including a trip to Alaska.

We stay within all specs also, actually we hope that our next 5th wheel will be shorter and not longer. From reading the docs on our 2017 truck its easy to see how some are confused. We like the minimalist lifestyle for traveling, and that includes loading to the Montana to the minimum, keeping the holding tanks empty and the fresh water full is certainly a good way to shift some weight off the king pen. However, we are only Long Timers. and have a home base to store those items not needed for a particular trip.

I well know laws and capacities are to be a concern to us all, but once again the MOC responders biased towards full / long timers beat the weight tambourine. There are boat loads of RV owners big and small that own a unit for 3-4 outings a year that don't use a half tank of fuel to get to any of their destinations. Yeah, their trucks are borderline or over on paper what they should be hooked to ... why do some demand that they buy the "correct" truck to use those 3-4 times a year??? The OP was definitely "tongue in cheek" when he posted this ... and I'm darned near out of popcorn.

First thing we learned in LAW CLASS..Anyone can be sued for "anything". The second rule we learned was if you win, try to collect. Some of us are known as 'Judgement Proof". This means even if you are liable and you don't have enough in assets or income, it would be fruitless to go after you. You cannot get blood from a turnip..The first thing an accident attorney does is look at the at fault policy to see what the liability coverage is. If one has basically nothing a litigant can go after, it is fruitless to carry an insurance policy with high liability coverage..

I used to advertise in a little magazine Precision Shooting. There was a lawyer that wrote for them, he said exactly the same thing. He advised the small manufacturers of gun related items not to have insurance. Without insurance you aren't worth suing.

Hi

X2 Lynwood has it correct.

My brother was run over by a young lady driving a 1 ton truck they had 10 and 20 insurance. They revived my brother after the emergency room doctor had declared him dead and he is doing well today.

There was no recovery from the owner of the truck because he had nothing that wasn’t mortgaged to the hilt.

The insurance company just issued a check for policy limits and that got them off the hook.

I never found out who paid the $700,000.00 in health care cost to save his life and on leg.

So I guess if you can live with your conscience there is nothing wrong with being “judgment proof”.

Hi

X2 for richfaa

And we weight often these things seem to gain weight as you go.

The Federal Regulations which generally apply to "for hire" trucks and transporters are what is in play at the scales. Since RVers are private and not driving down the road for money then the Federal regs do not apply, therefore they don't want you in their scale house wasting their time. If you want to weigh simply use the scale at whatever truck stop you fuel up at. It is generally a $10 charge and you can go across twice if you want, once hooked up and once with just your truck.

Even though most local law enforcement are not trained or certified to enforce Federal Regulations, each state has their own weight, height, width, and size limit laws. I tried weighing once a year because I wanted to stay within limits so my equipment wouldn't be maxed out while towing. To me it was always more of a safety thing and not just worrying about getting an overweight ticket.

We just traded in the 15 ram 3500 for a 2017 ram 3500 : Cummins 900 lb ft of torque, AISIN, factory prep, auto level, 4:10s dually... over 30,000 lbs of tow rating and over 7400 lbs of payload... We never think of weights now..
