Why you should carry a drill when you RV

So today we left the Monty to go to lunch and when we got back the key would not turn the deadbolt. Neither key would budge it. So I called Coach-Net and they sent out a Locksmith, no charge to me. The locksmith tried everything, but in the end, he had to drill out the cylinder so he could operator the deadbolt with a large screw driver. Now I have to buy a new lock, but I can get in and out of the camper for now.

So if you don't have Coach-Net, keep a drill handy for deadbolt repair.

Oh, by the way, does anyone know exactly which lockset will work on a 2014 Monty? I'd like to get a little higher quality and maybe an electronic lock if possible.

I believe these are the ones most people use, you can also find them in black: http://tweetys.com/rv-lock-and-pad-w...RVYhoCUyrw_wcB

A lot of the door locks were on recall and have free replacements. I changed mine out several moths ago.
There was a major "lock out" issue.

A drill and a circular saw are standard equipment in the tool chest. Hope we never need either on the Big Sky.

I carry two drills, a reciprocal saw and a jig saw and yes they come in handy for everything from mods to cutting firewood.

My lock does not appear to be part or the recall

Ours is quite a bit older model. But several years ago one morning when I tried to unlock the deadbolt it would not unlock. We were locked inside and could not get out! Thought I was going to get to try one of the emergency exit windows.

Fortunately I had some basic tools inside and managed to remove the deadbolt assembly. A screw had come loose inside preventing it from working. Took it apart, cleaned it, and put it all back together tightening everything well. Several years now and no more problem. But I often carry my cordless drill with me.

Got one of those electronic locks at last year's Rally and have been extremely disappointed in it. Warranty is only for 90 days and after I managed to break the wires between the two halves, I wasn't able to try installing it until we got back home and 94 days had passed. After repairing the wires and installing it (easy to do), I found one cylinder wouldn't work with the key. Haven't gotten around to finding a locksmith yet, but will probably put in a strictly mechanical one instead of the electronic one.

We, too, purchased the electronic lock at last year's rally. We haven't had any problems and love it. When it gets where you have to enter the code a couple off times before it will open, it's time to change the batteries. Really like the remote.

Our dead bolt did not stick it actually fell out of the door lock assembly. The part # is on the rear of the lock assembly and can be ordered from the manufacturer.

I just replaced the locks on both my doors. I installed an electronic lock on the forward door( RVlock v2.0) and the black RVlock mechanical handle on the aft door. Since I just installed it this is my initial impression. It has a nice sleek look to it and seems well built. It has a heavy solid feel to it. This is an expensive lock assy.
After doing some research and talking to the owner of the company I settled on the RVlock. Besides being able to lock and unlock it with the key or keypad code it was the only one I found that also comes with a key fob remote which I really liked. This way know body can get your door code by watching you push your key pad. Just like your car you just push the key fob as you are walking up to or away from your camper. But Like I said it is expensive and hopefully worth it. Time will tell if it lasts. Here is the manufactures website:

Once I got my replacement lock, I took the old one out and found the problem. For some reason the deadbolt when extended was jammed into some of the wood/composite material behind the striker plate. So it seems that after a year that wood has moved or swollen about 1/8". So I drilled it out and now the deadbolt locks and unlocks easily.
