Axle Size

Where does one find the axle size (Lbs) of the 2955RL? Is it stamped on the axle someplace? The tag on the axle does not give the pounds.

If a dexter axle - the weight (size) limit of the axle is stamped on the axle itself; if an alkor (think that is the spelling) there is a metal band that is close to the brake hub that tells its weight limit.

I have the 3400, it might be a possibility it's in the same place as the 2955.
This sticker is on the driver's side towards the front. Jack

I believe you may want to check the axle stamp (pretty sure all of the new units are weight stamped on the axles) or tag for verification. Some units were mis-labeled when the changeover to the 7000 # axles was introduced.
Bingo
On edit: I would hope that the 2008 models would be correct since the changeover was on the 2007 models. (by the way the discovery credit for this goes to Brad (bsmeaton) if I remember correctly.

Since I have a 2955 would it have the 6000 pound axles? I have 6000 pound on the label on the left front side of trailer. I will check the axle for a stamp also. The trailer is almost 10,000 pounds. 12,000 LB of axles leaves two thousand pounds for other stuff including water. I think I can fill that up pretty quick. Does anyone know if there is a safety margin for the weights?

Jolu,
Remember that the pin weight needs subtracted as well to determine your carrying capacity. It can be estimated at 20-25% of rig weight or can be more accurate if you weigh your truck with and without the rig hooked up. Difference is pin weight. By the way, Our 3400 has the lighter axles (6,000) and is listed as carrying capacity of 2000 pounds. We don't full time, but I don't think I am lugging around a tone of extras.

Just like bncinwv said the only way to be sure is to check the axel stamp because our unit was mislabeled and when we were doing the PDI I found it. We were one of the first ones to report it back to Team Montana, and they had to send us a new label (like the one jjackflash posted) for the trailer and a new label for the cabinet in the kitchen. When they changed over to the 7000# axles in early 2007 some units were mislabeled.

Jolu, as Bingo said, only part of that weight is on the axles. The rest is on the pin. For example, our 3400 has 6,000 lb axles. We just missed out on the changeover (drat). Our 3400 weighs (scaled weight) 14,620 with 2/3 full freshwater tanks, full propane, and all our gear onboard (we're heavily loaded). 11,760 of that is on the axles. So we have 240 lbs to spare on these 6000 lb axles. If we had the 7000 lb axles we'd have 1,240 to spare. Hope this helps.

The axels should have a iron stamp in the axel as a 6000 lb mite have a D6 or D60 as a 5200lb will have a D52 in it but its stamped into the steel and you have to hunt for it as it could be under a paper tag or any place , i had to rub my hand over my axels to find it then i also scraped off the paper tags to find it under 1 tag sailer

Thanks for all the replies and great information. I did find D60 on the tags on the axles. I believe I will weigh the unit soon. It would be good to know my weight. After all that has been posted about weights on this forum I did forget about the pin weight. JB

hookman,
I found a white vinyl tag on top of the axles about mid way. The tag has all information about the axle. Info like Dexter Axle #, date made, order # etc and D60-8. From what I read on the forum axles are changed from time to time and you may find the info someplace else on the axle and perhaps in a different form. JB

Same here. I took one of the tags and put it with my manuals.

I too have a 2955RL. The axles had a white tag stuck on them. Dexter D60-8. It means they are rated 6000# and have 8 lugs to secure the wheels. I asked Dexter.

Guys this should be stamped in the axel as they can put a tag on and in 2 years you find the axek straight, as they are built with a camber in them,, and the tag is washed off , what is the true weight of the axel, someone will clame it was not what you thought it was ,, sailer
i had tags stuck over the D52 axels so i speak from experence

sailer,
You are correct. After exploring and doing some painting on the axles I found a stamp on the back side a little left of center giving the 6000Lb rating and other information. The stamped info was very hard to see until I painted the area. I also removed the stick on tags and stored them with my axle book. JB

Well I am not happy after checking my axle stamps. I have the 5200 pound Dexter axle. The weight of the rig is over 10,000# at delivery. So should I be prepared to replace axles in a few months out of pocket?

Okie Guy,
Again, remember to subtract the pin weight. On a 10,000 pound rig, should be between 2000-2500 pounds.
