5th wheel hitches
I have decided to buy a 2005 Big Sky Montana. I need a hitch. Any suggestions. Have looked at superglides, They are pricey but are they worth the extra money? I am getting a quote of 2600 installed. Is this a good price? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated>

Don't know what that price includes, but IMHO it is extremely high. I got a 16k Husky (built by RBW), four way tilt, easily removed (comes off in two parts rather than one) for $379 plus $175 to have it installed. I bought it from a new RV dealer (thus the good price) and had it installed by a truck outfitter. For $2600...is it an air hitch? If you are looking at them, an air pin box is about 1/3 that amount.
As for what brands are good...for me, if it is a name brand and has the appropriate rating, that would do it.

You did not describe your tow vehicle. If you have a short bed then you will probably want a sliding hitch. Others that have them will be along to respond.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.
Cheers,

I always plug these guys. They are a great company and make terrific hitches. Very heavy duty and well priced. Check them out.

Be sure you go with at least an 18K hitch. The 16K is too lightweight given the GVWR of the Big Sky.

The GVWR of a 2005 Big Sky is only 14,160.

$2600 is about right for the total price of the Pullrite Superglide. IMHO it is the greatest hitch on the market. Where we spend the summer, I have to back out onto the road to get out of our site. With the superglide, all I have to do is get in and back up. There is a ditch across the road, so I have to be able to actually do a 90 degree turn to get out. No bars to unlock, no levers to flip, just make sure the hitch has locked into place and drive.
It we had it to do over again, we would have bought our superglide at the dealer where we bought our Monty and negotiated the price into the purchase.

I wouldn't have any other slider but an AUTOMATIC Pullrite Superglide. I haven't checked prices lately so I can't comment good or bad on the $2600. My SuperGlide was thrown in with the purchase of my 04 Monty and will be used on my New Monty.

If you can swing the $2600, I would get the Superglide. I have the Reese 16K slider, and I almost hit the cab when fueling Tuesday. I always put the slider back when maneuvering at the home base, but it is sort of hard to stop in traffic, get out and slide the hitch.

Interesting. $2,600 for a Superglide is considered to be a good value if one can afford it. But $2,250 for a Trailer Saver air hitch is considered to be spending more than necessary. Is that because an air hitch isn't viewed as giving much more benefit than an air pin box at 1/3 the price?

David,
The two hitches you mention serve a distinctly different purpose. The superglide is designed for the turning issue on short bed trucks, and the standard Trailer Saver hitch provides the air ride, however it is stationary. To correctly compare, the sliding Trailer Saver product is $3,850.
Air ride is wonderful, but when you also need the slide feature, it all gets more pricey and very few hitches can do both. The only ones that come to mind are the sliding trailer saver and the husky air slider.

Brad-- I recognize the different issues between the need for a slider and the desire for an air hitch--I just couldn't resist making a (poor) joke about what seemed to be the differences in attitude over whether $2,600 was a lot of money for a hitch--it's a lot for an air hitch but not a lot for a good slider. And here I thought money was money. LOL!!
Fortunately, as I have a long bed, I don't have to consider the sliding Trailer Saver. And if I go with the Trailer Saver I don't have to pay extra for an 18K or 20K hitch to handle the 16,100# GVRW for the new Big Skys as the TS3 is apparently rated up to 20,000#.

To add to the confusion, the 5th Airborne Pin Box is rated at 21k. Also, if all this information was available early in the buying decision, it would be a lot cheaper to get a long bed truck than a slider hitch.
