Norman ... we maintained our bank in Kansas since we can do all our banking by mail, phone or online. Actually, the only thing we switched over to SD is our insurance, simply because the company we had been with was not licensed to sell in South Dakota.

How exciting for you! Will you be full-timing, long-timing or what? We have the same year and model Montana as you and it's great ... lots of storage room.
Since we get back to the KC area twice a year, we've maintained our doctor and dentist, etc. in that area. I don't know if that would work out for anyone else, but since "home base" is in the middle of the country, it's easy for us to take off in different directions and yet get back in a somewhat timely manner when necessary.
Good luck on your upcoming adventures ... where are you going first?

Norm and Judy, we changed our bank to Valley Bank as our "primary account". They are a local bank with great customer service. The only real drawback is that they charge $5 a month for online banking. Maybe that will change in the future. It is my understanding that in order to establish "domicile" a person needs to do as much in your new home state as possible; i.e., banking, wills, drivers' licenses, and vehicle registration.

Norm and Judy, We were already with US Bank and that is a primary bank in South Dakota so just changed our address with the bank. Internet is free and so far we have found a lot of them in the west. No problems. We also changed our address on all of our investment accounts. No State sales tax in SD so 1099 shows State as South Dakota and we do not have to file.
We could not keep our Minnesota Health Ins. either so changed to Mutual of Omaha and also saved $$$. We are really lucky that we have our health as I know some people pay through the nose in South Dakota if they are not.

Norm, our plan is to retain our Calif. bank as we do everything by internet, phone now. They provide free services so no need to change, even though they do not have a presence in most of the places we will be staying. ATM's are available as are POS cashback available options.
We are on schedule to become SD residents in mid August, with DL's, vehicle reg's and insurance.
Will be out on the road fulltime about a month behind you guys, heading for Pahrump, NV and then meandering toward South Texas for the winter.
Good luck,
jerry

Just go to Walmart for cash. Whenever we're low on cash, we go to Walmart, buy something and get cash back, using your debit card. You can get up to $100 ... if we're about to hit the road, Steve will get money at one register and I'll get the same amount at another.
We're too cheap to pay an ATM fee, so this works for us.

Also, moving your bank account to SD is not required for residency although it can be used as one way to establish residency. Having a mail address, drivers licenses, and vehicles registered in SD is enough. We also registered to vote there and voted last year. So we kept our Kansas bank.

We did change our bank from Wells Fargo in CA to the Valley Bank in Sioux Falls. We wanted to erase EVERY financial link to CA, and put everything feasable on our SD address. On the other hand, we have had a bank in Texas for years as our "primary" bank. All the standard "free" stuff from that one. We only keep a relatiely small account in the Valley Bank, and don't use it for much of anything for checking. We hae had no need to access the Valley Bank by internet for anything.
Best,
