5th wheel cover

Looking to buy a cover for my 2010 3400RL. I guess what I’m looking for is some personal opinions including brands, fit, ease of putting it on and off, and any other suggestions. Also being a shade south of 70 and in good shape, for the shape I’m in, will I be able to put it on and off by myself with a little help from DW on the ground?
Thanks

I had a cover, once. It was like weestling an 800 pound gorilla. I would only recommend one if storing a camper loooong term.

I used a cover on my diesel pusher when we still had a house, due to oak tree resin dropping on it. You have to man handle the cover onto the roof, which is not easy. You have to foam pad any bit of your trailer that pokes out, like parts coming off the slide toppers, etc. If not, then the wind will move the cover and wear holes in the cover. Rolling out the cover on the roof will surely mean identifying what is the front and then un-rolling which is the easy part. I got three years out of my adco cover.

I have used the Adco product.

https://aax-us-east.amazon-adsystem....e-a6ea5eeb90ff

Its not horrible to put on and off. I role mine front to back and toss the sides out. Its getting the giant role off the roof (or up on the roof) that is the challenge. I wrapped a rope around and pulled it up.

The Adco product keeps the rig dry and breathes well. Protects against UV. Be prepared you will only get 2 (maybe 3) seasons out of it before it rips and falls apart.

the compromise is weight.

Kinda the same as 214skier,

Used the Adco cover on our old rig, I had cut tennis balls to go over the rain spouts on the roof to stop them from tearing up the cover. I would get my wife to help feed the cover up to me while I was on the roof then pulled it out long ways and kinda Hooked the front first then put down the sides. Also had some long thin straps my buddy gave me that they pull cable with to help secure it onto the rig. You do only get about 2 or 3 years out of them. Then you come home one day and your Monty is wearing a skirt because the top has ripped and the the whole cover has slid down around the tires!

Be careful as I did trip more than once, Never fell though, as its splayed out all over the roof, wind blows it around a bit, and murphys law will kick in and it will go around your feet!

Ditto Montana Man!!...........bought a "lightweight" cover from Camping World that was easy to install but it shredded after 6-9 months. Then bought a heavy cover from Camping World that was extremely difficult to lift onto the roof and pull the cover over the trailer due to its weight (and I ended up stepping through the bathroom vent cover while pulling the cover over as I was backing up.with the cover, ouch!!) but it also shredded but only after 2.25 years. Got a replacement heavy duty cover from Camping World and have not installed it. Pay attention to the rain spouts at each corner, if your trailer is like mine, which risk tearing the cover, so you will need to install some kind of cover on them before you put the cover on. Now we keep it waxed and don't worry about it in the elements while stored.

Had the Adco cover and it did as advertised. That being said I decided that no cover was worth me going to the hospital.

Many of us have never used a cover and stored the rig in snow wind and cold with no problems.

Agree - the only reason I've seen to cover is to keep Oak droppings off. Other than that some sort of structure, if allowed at S&B location.

Another look on covers

We use an ADCO cover made of Tyvec and like it’s durability. We left our unit in Dallas one year and Atlanta this last year with no cover but under a roof. I can tell you when we remove the cover in the spring here in Minneapolis, the unit looks just like it did when we put it away. If the wax was good and it was clean, it still is waxed and clean. Under the roof, it came out pretty weathered. A cover lesson learned, is anything that can wear a hole in the Tyvec will with any wind movement. Year 2 we used noodle material on all gutter spouts and sharp body corners. It comes with a repair kit and ADCO makes a larger repair kit pretty cheap. We like ours.

PS: better put it on with NO wind! It is a huge sail. I’m 72 and it is nearly impossible for the DW and I to put it on with wind. Take off back to front to make it easy to put on next year.

IMO opinion a cover is FAR worse than no cover at all if you live in windy country and take care of the RV and do regular mtce; washing, waxing with UV protectants. In my part of the world a cover will mar the surface...no matter what you do. Putting them on and off....at our age with our maladies it doesn't make any sense. Find a good enclosed facility, or build your own, if you intend to RV for a while and forget all that.

Never had or tried to put one on but I would think its got be a PITA. Like stated, maybe for long term storage. Defiantly not between trips.

This is the exact reason I built a pole barn that mine lives in. 90% of the time is sees no rain/snow or sunlight. Defiantly the way to go if you have the room and $$

When ever I want to buy something like this the wife makes me factor in a ER visit into the cost. Had one on a 40ft motor home, took up space in the garage most of the time because it was a pain. When I did use it it rubbed holes in it that had to be fixed.

Now we just take really good care of the roof and have the whole thing professionally washed twice a year.

Go to an RV parts shop, your local dealership, or a Camping world. Find the comparable fifth wheel cover still in the box. Now, simply lift the box. Next attempt to put it over your head, or on your shoulders (anything above your head).

Now you have your answer.

We had covers for our previous travel trailers, but when the trailers got longer and longer, the covers got bigger and bigger, and heavier and heavier, and I got older and older. When the thing got too bulky and heavy to lift, drag, pull, shove, push, tuck, yank, and simply, deal with, I quit using it. The last travel trailer and the current fifth wheel, ... well .. forget it!

Has anyone tried using a large tarp? Was curious how that might work easier than a full cover. Might not cover the entire rig but will cover the roof and part of the sides. Should keep the tree sap and bird poop off. I know keeping it waxed will help a lot.

Covered storage is best, but no cover is better than the hassle, damage and cost that a cover will cause.
