3400 Storage door
I don,t like the configuration of the left (drivers side) storage door under the bed on the 2004 3400RL when the slides are out. I have noticed a different door on the newer models. In order to access the compartment I have to hold the door on my back or prop it with a stick because it hits the bed slideout. The newer models have split the door and the halves open right and left, Is this new door the same size as the old one and can one order the new style for a retro-fit? Is there a modification kit for the old door? Any ideas?
PS: I like the relocation and installation of the external connections (water, cable, flush, winterization, water drain and etc) to the storage door area.

No they are not the same size. Several of the members have added a catch to take care of this. Ed got hit really hard with this stupid door and almost knocked him out. We got the bent T catch and started putting it on and found we needed self tapping screws. By the time I got back from the hardware store, it had started raining and we never got back to it. I have pictures of one fix. I'm late for an appointment right now but this afternoon I'll post the pictures for you.

Sue, I had the door fall down on me and it was not pretty! I must not of had it in the catch all the way. Lesson learned now I am very leary of these doors! Would love to see your fix for this.

These are the pictures that were sent to me by Steves. He told his dealer what he wanted and they did this. This bent hook is like what holds our front door open but is bent. We picked one up at an RV supply store - not cw.
This is the hook (on the slide) closed for travel. There is velro to hold the hook down when traveling. They actually used the bottom left screw hole that is already there. This is where we needed the self-taping screw - you are into metal
This is the hook open and you can see the velcro.
This is an overall view so you can see the hook and the catch - they have to line up just right.
This is a close up of the basement door.

Parrothead I like that idea. I must find a hook like that, but you say CW does not carry them? Who does? I know you said an RV supply store but who?

I have a 2007 3400. I still hit my head on the BR slide. Maybe it's just me...
Actually it is much better than what your "flipup" door looks like. Glad I got mine. We had a discussion a while back about the gas or hydraulic struts that some higher end fivers/Class As had. They can be bought after market I believe. I will look into these myself, as my shoulders really struggle (read pain) trying to latch the flipup doors that we still do have on the 3400 - front battery/slide hydraulics compartment and the main basement door on the curb side. I don't think these struts are that expensive... not sure, though.

We bought a hydraulic strut to use on our front compartment door but found that the door is too flimsy to with stand the pressure it requires to open the door. We thought it was going to be an answer to bonked heads, but it didn't work.

I saw a latch that might work. Just can't remember where I saw it so I can buy a few. Essentially, it was a piece of metal about8-10 long (the one I saw) 1" wide with a slot that ran the length of the metal piece. This was bolted to the frame. On the door was a "bolt" designed to run down the length of the metal piece. At the end of the metal piece, the slot was enlarged so when the door was opened the "bolt" ran up the slot and caught in the enlarged opening. If you can figure out what I am talking about, let me know the name and where I can buy it.
